Title: The carers' perception of nursing patients suffering from dementia : a qualitative study
Abstract: This qualitative study investigates the perception of relatives of persons with dementia while caring for them. An evaluation of the level of responsibility and emotional impact on these carers is also performed. The stress involved in caring for the person with dementia is identified and their reaction to this stress is explored. Semi-structured interviews were used for this research, with the participants being asked to participate by the researcher as they fulfilled the required criteria. The data collected was then analysed using a thematic analysis. Findings revealed that caring for a person with dementia is stressful and this stress was expressed from different outlooks and situations. Coping strategies were also individually adopted. It was concluded that overall, the person suffering from dementia is treated with dignity and respect by their relatives. Although they complained that there were difficult times, they knew that they had to be patient. As the participants of this study pointed out, more knowledge, awareness and in particular support, will be invaluable if offered to those directly involved and also to the general public. This is also valuable to the fact that as people are living longer the prevalence of dementia is increasing.

Title: Patients experiences of services and their delivers, in an acute psychiatric ward
Abstract: The aim of this study was to present a picture of life in an acute in-patient psychiatric ward
by investigating patients' subjective experiences of the care they received and their
perceptions of the delivery of that care. A qualitative methodology was adopted and ten semi
structured interviews were carried out. The respondents were part of a purposive sample and
the interview schedule was developed after a thorough literature search highlighted key areas
to be raised in the study. A process of thematic analysis revealed that three major themes
emerged from the experiences of the participants; these were interpersonal factors,
environmental factors and factors related to information. Collectively these themes defined
the participants' experiences and perceptions of acute in-patient psychiatric care. The results
of the study confirmed that of many other international surveys. That is, that for some
people their experience as an in-patient in an acute psychiatric ward provided treatment and
support that met their needs. For many others however, various experiences and perceptions
made their encounter with acute psychiatric services less than therapeutic. The responses of
the participants were assimilated and later underpinned the basis of recommendations for
future service policy, design and delivery.

Title: Nurses knowledge and attitude towards mentally ill patients
Abstract: The aim of this quantitative descriptive research study was to identify the attitudes of
nurses towards mentally ill patients. The objectives of this study included the
investigation of nurses' views and attitudes towards mentally ill patients, and whether
variables such as gender, working experience, grade and age have an influence on
these attitudes. Data was collected using The Attitudes Towards Acute Mental Health
(33), ATAMH(33), (Baker, 2006), administered to a convenience sample of 150
subjects recruited from a state owned psychiatric hospital. All nursing grades were
represented in this study. In a broad manner the findings in this study largely agreed
with similar studies carried out elsewhere. In fact the large majority of the
participants showed a level of positive regard towards mentally ill patients. As stated
in most literature and also evident in the participant' s replies, stigma and negative
attitudes should be reduced as much as possible for acceptance to occur. Results do
show a slightly higher positive attitudinal difference between Registered Mental
Health Nurses than other nurses. This may be attributed to the more in depth
education of Registered Mental Health Nurses. This needs to be investigated further
in order to be able to confirm if this is the case. Results analysed by gender, age and
years of experience in the mental health field followed the same pattern of the main
results. Education and knowledge play a key role in the formation of attitudes, so
education and knowledge about mental health and mental illness is of the essence in
order to overcome stigma, prejudice and discrimination and provide the highest level
of care possible.

Abstract: The opinion of people with mental health problems who were at the rehabilitation unit
prior to their integration into the community were investigated using qualitative
approach. Nine potential respondents were selected and semi structured interviews were
carried out in order to collect data on the topic that raise various questions and doubts.
The researcher designed the research tool herself after an extensive review of the
literature. Analyzing the data was performed after listening several times to the
audiotapes prior to being transcribed. On reading the interview transcriptions, emergent
themes were identified. The findings from this study reinforced the results of previous
studies undertaken in other countries, which sustained that thorough rehabilitation
programmes are needed to help the patient to traverse from hospital to community. This
dissertation is meant to encourage and lead the way to further research in this field of
study.
