Abstract: In 2000, Gozo's regional GDP stood at just 71.7% of Malta's national average, which in turn, is just over half of the EU average. This means that Gozo lags far behind when compared to EU countries. The EU Treaty acknowledges that island regions, such as Gozo, may suffer certain disadvantages which need to be addressed. Malta claimed that Gozo suffers from permanent disadvantages as a result of its status as a small island within an archipelago of islands (double insularity), its small population size coupled with high population density, its limited resources and its environmental fragility. Gozo also has an over-dependence on the primary sector (agriculture) and on the secondary sector (industry) of employment. All these factors have an impact on the economic and social development of Gozo. In order to address Gozo's disadvantages, Malta sought to negotiate a special arrangement for Gozo that takes into account both its funding requirements as well as its other needs.2003-01-01T00:00:00ZBook Review : definitive church historyhttps://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/563542020-05-24T05:10:29Z2003-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: Book Review : definitive church history

Abstract: A thesis submitted by Raymond Xerri for a Ph.D from Victoria University of Technology, Melbourne, 2002 deals with "the cultural impact of migration and return migration on an island community". More specifically, it reviews in considerable detail the effect of migration on Gozo, from both positive and negative aspects. It explores the meaning and significance of migration and return migration between Gozo and Australia.2003-01-01T00:00:00ZOn the specificity of Gozo and of Gozitan female labourhttps://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/563502020-05-26T14:28:22Z2003-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: On the specificity of Gozo and of Gozitan female labour
Abstract: This paper reviews the position of Gozitan women in the labour market in the 1990s. Although Gozitan female labour accounts for a seemingly marginal 2% of all the gainfully occupied in the Maltese islands, their case makes a strong argument in favour of the specificity of Gozo, and of smallness as a variable in social, labour market and economic research.2003-01-01T00:00:00Z
