Authors: Smuniewski, Cezary; Urych, Ilona; Zanini, Andrea
Abstract: Purpose: The objective of this paper is to present the principles underlying the economic transformation in Poland after 1989 according to the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Wałęsa. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research method applied was analysis and synthesis of materials from the Archives of the President of the Republic of Poland in Warsaw. This approach is located in research in the field of economics, with appropriate references to social issues, and thus is related to the subject matter of security studies. Findings: The empirical results show that the main principles underlying the economic transformation in Poland after 1989 included: the consistency of political and economic reforms, rapid privatisation and reprivatisation, internationalisation of trade, establishment of state institutions to support economic transformation, promotion and protection of the national character of the economy, protective measures for the economically weakest groups. In the process of systemic transformation, little reference was made to the power of national memory. Practical Implications: With the fall of communism in Poland and the political transformation in 1989, an economic transformation was needed – a transition from a centrally controlled economy to a market economy. In the course of political and economic reforms, one of the greatest obstacles in the process of transformation turned out to be the mentality of a society oscillating around a totalitarian system, the inefficacy of legislative processes and the application of foreign, not Polish solutions. Originality/value: Selected unique and unpublished sources were used for this study. These are texts summarising the activities of the President and the circles surrounding the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland and the Presidentʼs Political Services Office.

Authors: Dobrowolski, Zbyslaw
Abstract: Purpose: This research presents a general framework for analysing factors associated with pandemic crisis management. The study intends to sharpen one thinking about improving the fight against Covid-19 and better understand the multiple drivers of planning and implementing a multidimensional anti-pandemic prevention system. Approach/Methodology/Design: This paper's insights have emerged iteratively by considering both theory and empirical data. The abductive reasoning and grounded theory were used during this study. Findings: TTT strategy, maintaining a social distance, and the consistency of decisions regarding the sanitary regime's conditions contribute to fighting the pandemic. However, duplicating solutions adopted in countries that are successful in combating Covid-19 by other countries requires considering social capital determinants. Countries that neglected sustainable development, including the care for social capital development, suffer consequences today. Other external factors caused the efficiency of combating Covid-19. Practical Implications: This study continues developing the pandemic crisis management theory and attempts to enrich it by pointing to success and failure factors. From the practical side, the research allows for several directional proposals, improving combating Covid-19. Originality/Value: This original study aims to determine universal factors of pandemic prevention efficacy. The research highlights the role of social capital in effectively combating the pandemic.

Title: New phenomena in the price movement of manufactured goods in contemporary international trade
Authors: Dudzinski, Jerzy; Knap, Renata
Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of the article is to identify trends in the movement of processed goods prices in international trade in 2014-2020 and to explain them in the context of structural transformations occurring in the exports’ sector of the countries under study. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research on export price trends was conducted based on the export price indices of processed goods and indices of manufacture to manufacture terms of trade. Then, the analysis of changes in the structure of exports of processed goods by the degree of processing of the countries and groups of countries studied was made. Findings: The results indicate the existence of relatively high dynamics of export prices of processed goods of China and India, i.e., developing countries, so far competing with low prices in exports. This phenomenon occurred under the conditions of an apparent increase in the share of high-skill and technology-intensive manufactures in the total exports of these countries in the last quarter of a century, as shown in the study. Practical Implications: The results of this research have important implications for economic policy-making in developing countries. They confirm that goods characteristics (export structure) are still an important determinant of export prices. Originality/Value: The present study demonstrates new phenomena in the price movement of manufactured goods in international trade that deviate from previous trends analyzed and reported in the literature. The findings contribute to the ongoing discussion on the increasing technological sophistication of developing countries' exports improving their terms of trade.
