Abstract: F'din l-era ta' komunikazzjoni fil-massa li qed ngħixu fiha, is-sottotitli saru għodda neċessarja&#xD;
sabiex il-media xxandar il-messaġġ tagħha fuq medda iżjed wiesa'. F'Malta, it-traduzzjoni&#xD;
tas-sottotitli hija xi ħaġa ġdida u qatt ma rajnihom implementati ħlief f'ambjent akkademiku,&#xD;
bħal ma qed isir f‟din it-teżi. Għalhekk l-għan ewlieni ta‟ din it-teżi huwa li jiġi indirizzat dan&#xD;
in-nuqqas billi l-metodu ta‟ sottotitli jiġi implimentat f‟proġett fuq livell ta‟ kultura popolari,&#xD;
u żgur l-aqwa eżempju ta‟ dan huwa fuq livell ta‟ films. It-traduzzjoni ta‟ dawn is-sottotitli&#xD;
trid tkun waħda tajba ħafna biex it-traduttur, li f‟dan il-każ huwa l-istudent, twasslu għallgrad&#xD;
ta‟ Master fit-traduzzjoni.&#xD;
Wieħed mill-iskopijiet ewlenin ta‟ din it-teżi huwa li titqajjem kuxjenza kollettiva dwar ilpotenzjal&#xD;
ta' dan il-mezz ta‟ komunikazzjoni miktub li huwa s-sottotitolazzjoni u r-riżultat&#xD;
pożittiv li dan jista' jġib miegħu meta wieħed jippromwovi l-lingwa tiegħu stess b'dan il-mod.&#xD;
Ir-raġuni għalfejn is-sottotitli bil-Malti m'humiex mezz tant komuni f'Malta jagħtiha DíazCintas&#xD;
li osserva li l-korrelazzjoni bejn l-eżistenza ta' forma ta' traduzzjoni tal-films (sottotitli&#xD;
jew iddabjar) u l-pajjiż li jużahom m'hijiex kemm hu sinjur il-pajjiż iżda l-kobor tiegħu.&#xD;
Il-film li ġie magħżul għat-traduzzjoni ta‟ din it-teżi jismu “Fight Club”. Dan hu film&#xD;
kontroversjali għall-aħħar li ħareġ fl-1999 u li hu meħud minn-novella tal-istess isem ta'&#xD;
Chuck Palahniuk. Illum, dan il-film huwa meqjus bħala “cult classic” u l-ġenerazzjoni&#xD;
żagħżugħa kollha ftit jew wisq taf bih. Dan il-film jittratta spettru vast ta' temi relevanti,&#xD;
fosthom il-materjaliżmu tas-soċjetà moderna, mard mentali, relazzjonijiet umani u nnikiliżmu.&#xD;
Minħabba l-kwadru psikoloġiku li jippreżenta dan il-film, jiġifieri li l-protagonista tal-film ikun individwu b‟żewġ personalitajiet distinti, joffri sitwazzjonijiet u sfidi differenti&#xD;
mill-aspett tat-traduzzjoni, speċjalment meta se jiġi tradott lejn il-Malti, li f‟dan il-każ hija lLingwa&#xD;
Mira (LM). Il-ħtieġa li t-traduttur ikun jaf b‟mod tajjeb ħafna n-nisġa tal-film hija&#xD;
bil-wisq essenzjali, u allura kienet naturali li l-ewwel saret riċerka intensiva dwar l-istorja talfilm,&#xD;
tan-novella oriġinali, biex it-traduttur seta‟ jifhem aħjar il-ħsieb tal-awtur dwar l-istorja&#xD;
u l-osservazzjoni ta' dettalji rqaq (kemm fil-film u kif ukoll fil-ktieb). Dan fisser ħafna sigħat&#xD;
ta' qari u studju intensiv tal-film qabel biss ma bdiet it-traduzzjoni.&#xD;
Fil-bidu, in-novella “Fight Club” ħarġet bħala storja qasira ta‟ seba‟ paġni li l-awtur kitibhom&#xD;
waqt wara nofsinhar monotonu. Il-kunċett kien li tinkiteb storja qasira li fihom ikun hemm&#xD;
sett ta‟ regoli li, skont l-istess awtur, setgħu jippermettulu li jiddeskrivi din ir-realta‟ tal-„Fight&#xD;
Club‟ lil hinn mir-realta‟ taż-żmien. L-ispirazzjoni għat-titlu tal-ktieb ġiet mill-fatt li fiż-&#xD;
żmien li l-awtur kien qed jikteb din l-istorja, kien hemm ħafna kotba b‟titli bħal “The Joy&#xD;
Luck Club”, “The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” u “How to Make an American&#xD;
Quilt”. Dawn kienu kollha kotba li, skont Chuck Palahniuk, ippreżentaw mudell soċjali għannisa&#xD;
fejn kienu mistiedna biex ikunu flimkien, ipoġġu bilqiegħda, waqt li jaqsmu l-istejjer&#xD;
tagħhom ma‟ xulxin. Madankollu, l-awtur ma sab l-ebda ktieb li jippreżenta l-istess mudell,&#xD;
imma applikat għall-irġiel. Mudell bħal dan seta jagħti lill-irġiel struttura, rwoli, u regoli ta‟&#xD;
logħba jew biċċa xogħol mingħajr wisq sentimentaliżmu. L-awtur jikteb li dan seta‟ ssejjaħ xi&#xD;
ħaġa mingħajr sens ta‟ theddida bħal “Barn-Raising Club” jew “Golf Club”, iżda l-isem&#xD;
“Fight Club” ippreferieh.

Abstract: Din id-dissertazzjoni tikkonsisti fit-traduzzjoni ta' żewġ testi, wieħed adattament tal-ieħor, bl-isem 'The Colonel's Lady.' 'The Colonel's Lady' hija storja li ġiet miktuba f'żewġ mezzi letterarji differenti. L-ewwel test li nkiteb kien in-novella minn William Somerset Maugham u wara din in-novella ġiet adattata għall-iskrin minn Robert Cedric Sherriff. F'din id-dissertazzjoni bis-saħħa tat-traduzzjoni taż-żewġ testi, tinħareġ id-differenza fil-kitba bejn iż-żewġ mezzi. Mit-traduzzjoni tan-novella u l-iscreenplay ta' 'The Colonel's Lady,' il-qarrej ta' din id-dissertazzjoni jagħraf id-differenzi li jirriżultaw mill-iskopijiet differenti li għalihom huwa miktub it-test, pereżempju d-djalogi huma ħafna aktar żviluppati u twal fl-iscreenplay meta mqabblin mad-djalogi użati fin-novella. Il-fatt li filwaqt li fin-novella ċerti partijiet jiġu biss deskritti, fl-iscreenplay, minħabba li l-istorja tkun qed tintwera dak il-ħin quddiem l-udjenza, l-awtur ikollu ħafna drabi jżid biex jiżviluppa storja kompleta bħal dik mogħtija fin-novella. Dan kollu jaffettwa t-traduzzjoni minħabba li ż-żewġ forom jitolbu approwċ u stili ta' kitba differenti. Mit-traduzzjoni taż-żewġ mezzi letterarji wieħed ikun jista' jqabbel iż-żidiet u t-telf li jsir fir-rakkont tal-istorja, kif ukoll differenzi oħra bħall-bidla fl-espressjoni bejn l-istil miktub (fin-novella) u dak mitħaddet (fl-iscreenplay) u l-forma tat-test. Studju bħal dan juri li minkejja li l-qafas tat-test huwa l-istess, minħabba li l-għan ivarja ma' kull mezz letterarju li jintuża, it-traduttur ma jistax juża l-istess traduzzjoni.

    <summary type="text">Title: Translating Oriana Fallaci
Abstract: The main aim of this thesis is the translation of a part of Oriana Fallaci's novel Lettera a un bambino mai nato from Italian into Maltese, with a discussion on the feasible translation strategies that could be applied in order to reach this goal. Apart from the translation of a part of Lettera a un bambino mai nato, this dissertation also focuses on a detailed analysis of the translation process and a discussion on the strategies adopted to overcome the various difficulties. Moreover, the analysis lists all the possible translation variations in the target text and gives a thorough explanation of the decisions taken. The rule of thumb of this dissertation has been the correct transfer of meaning from the source text to the target text, as well as the adaptation of culture-specific items and idiomatic expressions to the receiving language and culture. The ultimate result of this dissertation is to show that the elegance, rhythm and power of Fallaci's words may be satisfactorily delivered to the target audience notwithstanding the complicated task of conveying cultural elements through a literary translation and the possibility of cultural discrepancy. This dissertation will be a clear demonstration that languages are bound to their cultural context and that the diversities which arise may require different approaches in order to be resolved.

    <summary type="text">Title: Translation of a selection of poems from Mario Azzopardi's 'Noti mis-Sanatorju tal-Mistici' from Maltese into English
Abstract: Literary translator Edith Grossman argues that ‘for writers whose first language is&#xD;
limited in terms of how many people speak it, translation is indispensable for achieving an&#xD;
audience of consequential size.’&#xD;
 Maltese is one such example of a language which is limited&#xD;
in terms of how many people speak it. It is mostly spoken and understood only by Maltese,&#xD;
amounting to its population of around 400,000 persons. This means that the readership of a&#xD;
Maltese author writing in his native language cannot exceed 400,000 persons. This is one&#xD;
reason why Maltese authors are very keen on being translated. As critic Marilyn Gaddis&#xD;
Rose wrote ‘what translating does is to help us get inside literature.’ It follows that without&#xD;
translation, readers who cannot read Maltese are unable to get inside Maltese literature. In&#xD;
case of poetry, Robert Frost thought that it is lost in translation. However it could be counter&#xD;
argued that poetry will never be as lost as in a language the reader cannot understand.&#xD;
The urge at presenting Maltese literature to a wider audience has been recently&#xD;
expressed by Immanuel Mifsud in an interview published on 11th May 2012 on the Times of&#xD;
Malta. Mifsud, one of the leading authors of contemporary Maltese literature who was&#xD;
awarded the European Union Prize for Literature in 2011, expressed his view that there is an&#xD;
urgent need for Maltese literature to be translated and exported. According to Mifsud, when&#xD;
Maltese authors become conscious of a significant increase in readership, their perspective&#xD;
and writing will also change. Mifsud concludes that as a result this could also improve the&#xD;
quality of Maltese literature. &#xD;
On the local level, an organisation that promotes literary translation is Inizjamed.&#xD;
Inizjamed is a voluntary non-governmental cultural organization, founded in 1998, committed towards the regeneration of culture and artistic expression in the Maltese Islands with a view&#xD;
to promote a greater awareness of the cultures of the Mediterranean. Amongst its main&#xD;
activities is the publication of Maltese literature both in the original and in translation.&#xD;
On the EU level, the PETRA (European Platform for Literary Translation) project is promoting&#xD;
and supporting literary translation and literary translators in Europe. At the opening of the&#xD;
PETRA congress, held in Brussels in December 2011, Androulla Vassiliou, European&#xD;
Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism, Youth and Sport, claimed that&#xD;
‘Europe’s great heritage should be enjoyed by the many, not by the few. That is why&#xD;
translators are essential.’&#xD;
The idea of this investigation took form following the proposition made by the author,&#xD;
Mario Azzopardi, to have one of his own favourite poetry anthologies, Noti mis-Sanatorju&#xD;
tal-Mistiċi, translated into English. Such proposition was embraced in response to the need of&#xD;
making Maltese literature available to a wider audience. Although, as has been stated by&#xD;
many translators, the translation of poetry undoubtedly poses greater difficulties than that of&#xD;
prose, the task is to some extent facilitated when the poems to be translated are written in free&#xD;
verse, as those in Noti mis-Sanatorju tal-Mistiċi. The translator is spared the ‘infernal&#xD;
nuisance’ caused by the tyranny of rhyme and metre which impose a much greater limitation&#xD;
on the choice of words. Furthermore the growing interest in the practice of literary&#xD;
translation and the affinity with Azzopardi’s vision were of inspiration to take up such&#xD;
investigation as a Masters dissertation in Translation Studies. &#xD;
Ultimately, this investigation aims to fulfil two scopes of translation: the primitive&#xD;
scope of translation, ‘the utilitarian one of overcoming ignorance of the language of the&#xD;
original’ and as a means to secure the survival of the text, to give it an ‘afterlife.’
