Title: The Syrian crisis
Authors: Ando, Salvatore
Abstract: The Syrian crisis creates a number of reflections which relate
not only to the humanitarian crisis which is the result of the very
harsh repression which has been ordered by Assad to suppress
the riots, but also the peculiarity of the conflict in the context of
the revolutions produced by "the Arab Springs".

Title: The role of tradition in the Maltese mixed jurisdiction
Authors: Ando, Biagio
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide significant insights into the Maltese
legal system with a special focus on private law. The assumption is that
this legal system is the by-product of the "mixing" of innovation and
tradition, resulting from the interaction of common law and continental
law. A major role in the development of the system is played by the
courts. Some examples (moral damages and pre-contractual liability) are
considered which highlight the importance of the creative role adopted
by the Maltese judges.

Title: Social and economic rights in the Constitution of the United States
Authors: Corso, Lucia
Abstract: The article starts by discussing the most common explanations for a substantial
silence of the US constitutional culture on social and economic
rights. It then suggests that the most plausible explanation seems to rest
rather than on what it is usually referred to as the American exceptionalism,
on a peculiar culture of rights spread among US legal thinkers and
endorsed by Supreme Court Justices. A review of the past and more recent
Supreme Court case law on social and economic rights is presented,
as well as a tepid prediction of what will occur in the future.
