OAR@UM Community: Mikelanġ Borg (Valletta 1868-St Julians 1939) was a theatre-maker, printer, trade unionist and politician. He is best known as the director of L’Indipendenza theatre company between the last years of the nineteenth century until his death. Under his leadership, the company was transformed from a typical amateur company to an innovative semi-professional company, performing in large theatres like the Royal Opera House and staging large scale productions that were not only popular but also profitable. Part of Borg’s contribution to the company was translating and adapting a large number of comic works, mostly recent works from French and Italian theatre.
