Abstract: F’epoki mbiegħda fejn ix-xjenza kienet limitata u fl-assenza ta’ għarfien mediku fuq
mard infettiv, matul epidemiji qerrieda, il-bniedem, dar b’fidi u tama lejn Alla, b’mod
speċjali permezz tal-qima lejn is-Santissmu Sagrament u r-relikwi. Kien hemm devozzjoni
partikulari lejn il-qaddisin patruni tal-pesta bħal Santu Rokku u San Sebastjan kif
ukoll lejn qaddisin oħra fosthom il-Madonna, Santa Rożalija, San Nikola u Sant’Anna.
L-istoriku Taljan Bartolomeo dal Pozzo (1637-1722) attribwixxa l-epidemija bubonika
bħala tpattija divina kontra l-bnedmin għal għemilhom u dnubiethom! [silta]

Abstract: Il-kult ta’ San Sebastjan tfaċċa fl-Ewropa matul l-aħħar fażi tal-Imperu Ruman u minn
dakinhar kellu rwol sinifikanti fl-istorja reliġjuża u kulturali tal-kontinent. San Sebastjan
kien martri Nisrani li jingħad li kien kaptan fil-Gwardja Pretorjana tal-Imperatur
Dijoklezjanu. Skont il-leġġenda, kien ikkundannat għall-mewt minħabba t-twemmin
Nisrani tiegħu u kien marbut ma’ siġra u sparaw fuqu l-vleġeġ. L-istorja tkompli tinnarra
li hu baqa’ ħaj bl-għajnuna ta’ mara Kristjana jisimha Irene. Meta rkupra saħħtu lura, San
Sebastjan kompla jikkonverti ħafna nies għall-Kristjaneżmu qabel ma reġa’ safa martri
għat-tieni darba billi ġie msawwat bil-bsaten sal-mewt. [silta]

Exuberance to sobriety : church iconography in Malta from the Baroque machina towards a puritan artistic sensibility (1565–1930)

Title: Exuberance to sobriety : church iconography in Malta from the Baroque machina towards a puritan artistic sensibility (1565–1930)
Authors: Spiteri, Hilary
Abstract: Anyone travelling in Malta can see from a distance how the cityscapes
are crowned with the great mass of their churches and belfries. Over
time, towns were busy because of their churches, and nowadays,
they stand as an image of what a church town used to be. And what
was a church town? It was a lifestyle, which breathed through and
with its church, where houses huddled below the church’s imposing
structure, streets converged to it, and people turned from their
everyday activities to gaze at the church.
In Malta, churches represented a strong sense of community.
The peasant and the knight participated in the life of the church to
the same extent and with the same affection during its construction
over the decades. Everyone, without exception, was involved in the
common life of the parish church. No one in town rested at night
without being aware that outside, whether near or far, they too
possessed riches.

Title: Charting change : the Malta drawing school, artistic education and the Hyzler report relazione dello stato delle scuole del disegno nell’Università di Malta, dal 1802 al 1850 in British colonial Malta
Abstract: The National Archives of Malta houses a
significant document entitled Relazione dello
Stato delle Scuole del Disegno nell’Università
di Malta, dal 1802 al 1850 (hereinafter
referred to as report) that provides valuable
insights into the Malta Drawing School
(hereinafter referred to as academy), it’s
academic artistic training and the state of
art in Malta at the turn of the nineteenth
century, as well as its development over
the following five decades. Since its initial
critical evaluation and publication in 1983,
the history of the document’s location has
drawn attention, particularly its transfer from
the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta, where
it was originally housed, to Santo Spirito,
Rabat in 1994 — now the site of the National
Archives of Malta. During this period of
transition, the document’s whereabouts
were lost until it was rediscovered in 2004
during the extensive research undertaken
for my Master’s dissertation. Its subsequent
analysis was further developed in the 2011
publication, Academic Artistic Training in
Early British Malta.
