Of angels and thunderbolts i.e. common pitfalls in common paediatric surgical maladies

Title: Of angels and thunderbolts i.e. common pitfalls in common paediatric surgical maladies
Authors: Felice, Arthur G.
Abstract: The angels of the title are our paediatric patients. The thunderbolts - could
well be punishments hurled by Zeus on contemporary descendants of Aesculapius
who all too frequently trip in the common pitfalls of paediatric
surgery. More frequently the thunderbolts refer to the cries of anguish
(commonly called swear - words) coming from the Surgeon who has to deal
with the problem.

Interventional procedures in paediatric cardiology

Title: Interventional procedures in paediatric cardiology
Authors: DeGiovanni, Joseph V.
Abstract: Cardiac catheterisation is performed with increasing frequency to perform
therapeutic manoeuvres. These either replace surgery or are complementary to
it. The first interventional procedure in paediatrics was the creation of an atrial
septal defect in a baby with transposition of the great arteries by William
Rashkind in 1966. This procedure revolutionised diagnostic cardiac catheterisation
and also gave the opportunity for patients with transposition of the
great arteries to live sufficiently long to have a surgical operation at a later
date.

Therapeutic insults

Title: Therapeutic insults
Authors: Mifsud, Anton
Abstract: The urgent need to update trends and attitudes in general paediatric practice at
a basic level. My purpose today is not to submit a monotonous list of insults committed
by medical and paramedical staff towards their patients, but rather to limit
myself to certain aspects of paediatric care which leave a great deal to be
desired at the present time.

Intensive care : the local scene

Title: Intensive care : the local scene
Authors: Bailey, Mark; Buhagiar, Tancred
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to briefly describe the intensive care facilities available
in the Paediatric Department and to review the work carried out in this unit.
The Special Care Baby Unit (S.c.B.u.) in Karen Grech Hospital was opened
in December 1979. It was designed to cater for the needs of newborn infants
requiring special and intensive care. Very sick children up to the age of 3 years
have also been looked after in the unit as it was felt that the adult Intensive
Therapy Unit (LT.U.) was unsuitable for their needs. Thus the term S.c.B.u.
is really incorrect as the unit is actually a Special Care Baby Unit, Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (N.LC.U.) and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (P.LC.U.)
combined.
