Title: Surgery in Malta : yesterday, in our day and tomorrow?
Authors: Griffiths, Victor G.
Abstract: The creation in 1676 by Grand Master Nicholas Cotoner of the School of Anatomy and Surgery attached to the Sacra Infermeria rates as more than a landmark ... it is a great beacon which illuminates us to this day by virtue of its survival as our University’s Medical School so that our Faculty of Medicine can proudly claim to be surpassed in seniority only by that of Theology. In this article the author treats in some detail surgical practice in Malta over the last century, after dealing briefly with a few items from the time of the Knights.

Title: Sir Themistocles Zammit : his honours and an annotated bibliography of his medical work
Authors: Wyatt, H. V.
Abstract: Sir Themistocles Zammit was born 30th September 1864 and died 2nd November 1935. Dr. Paul Cassar wrote that Zammit “is, in my view, Malta’s most distinguished man”. He was scientist, doctor, chemist, archaeologist, writer and statesman, yet there has been no proper biography of him and no complete list of his publications and only few of his personal papers survive. It is difficult to trace his career and there seem to be few reminiscences about him. In this article the author compiles an annotated bibliography of the medical papers of Sir. T. Zammit.

Title: Public health medicine in Malta : past, present and future
Authors: Vassallo, A.; Gilles, Herbert M.
Abstract: This article highlights some of the significant developments in public health including the pattern of disease in past centuries when emphasis was on sanitation and control of epidemics. The improved social conditions as well as health care developments during the past decades have not only changed this pattern, but have also modified the approach to public health. The future presents us with challenges which we must face through appreciation of the issues involved and the use of appropriate strategies.

Primary health care at the turn of the millennium : evolution, changes and contrasts

Title: Primary health care at the turn of the millennium : evolution, changes and contrasts
Authors: Xuereb, Joseph
Abstract: Primary health care is a form of front-line medicine comparable to a valve with a filter. If either is blocked or weak, large amounts of relatively unimportant and trivial material will overflow, causing confusion and delays in the secondary channels. Changes in front-line medicine have repercussions in the secondary and tertiary health care sectors. In this article the author outlines the realities the primary health care is facing at the turn of the new millennium.
