Title: Can a relationship between medicines consumption and gender be determined in Malta?
Authors: Anastasi, Alison
Abstract: For many years, females were under represented in clinical trials and only recently has there been a significant increase in the number and proportion of women who participate in such studies. Major issues about gender differences in the field of medicines revolve around medicines used in cardiovascular and respiratory disease, oncology, liver diseases, and osteoporosis. Various international studies have shown that overall rates of medicine use are significantly higher in males than in females. These studies also found that patterns of medicine use, abuse and/or dependence differ by age group, gender and medicine used. In this paper, an attempt will be made to identify patterns of medicine use between men and women in Malta in some disease areas. Limitations will be highlighted.2014-01-01T00:00:00ZA global review of male offspring preference and gender bias in the caring of children

Title: A global review of male offspring preference and gender bias in the caring of children
Authors: Grech, Victor E.
Abstract: Gender-based discrimination against females is rampant in certain parts of the world. This extends to children and to their care, and occurs mainly in South Asia and China. Bias is widespread and includes inpatient and outpatient healthcare, access to vaccinations and to food, leading to outright neglect. This has led to up to 200,000,000 missing women worldwide. Education and active corrective measures are desperately needed.2014-01-01T00:00:00ZThe curvy side of dementia : the impact of gender on prevalence and caregiving

Title: The curvy side of dementia : the impact of gender on prevalence and caregiving
Authors: Scerri, Charles
Abstract: Dementia, the most common form of which is Alzheimer’s disease, is a mental illness characterised by progressive deterioration of cognitive function. Various studies indicate that significant gender differences exist in dementia prevalence and caregiving with women being the most negatively affected. Biological variations in hormonal regulation and immune response can lead to changes in cognitive function. Depression, which is more prevalent in females, is also associated with a higher risk of developing dementia. The majority of caregivers of individuals with dementia are women, the latter experiencing more psychological burden that men. This highlights the importance of more research in gender-specific issues relating to caring for individuals with dementia in order to develop interventions aimed at improving the quality of life through bettering dementia management and care.2014-01-01T00:00:00ZPsychotropic medication and pregnancy

Title: Psychotropic medication and pregnancy
Authors: Grech, Anton
Abstract: Since most severe psychiatric conditions tend to start in young individuals who are of childbearing age, when prescribing psychotropic medication one needs to take into consideration the difference between males and females due to the potential teratogenic effects of psychotropic medication. This needs to be taken in consideration also in females who are not planning a pregnancy because of the high number of unplanned pregnancies. In a woman who starts to suffer from mental illness during pregnancy, one should choose an established drug at the lowest effective dosage. In a woman who is taking psychotropic medication and is planning a pregnancy, the main issue is whether to discontinue treatment or change medication. For this decision, several factors, mainly the severity of the condition, and possibility of relapse, should be taken into consideration. This is also the case in a woman who is taking psychotropic medication and discovers that she is pregnant.2014-01-01T00:00:00Z
