Title: Clinical trials on medicinal products in Malta following EU accession
Authors: Ellul, Ian C.; Calleja, Neville
Abstract: Following EU Accession, Malta has to adopt EU Directives as part of its own legislation. Three such directives concern the conduct of clinical trials in European countries 2001/20/EC, 2003/94/EC and 2005/28/EC. These directives, and the respective guidelines explaining their implementation, have considerably changed the way clinical trials are conducted. While the participation of Malta in clinical trials is to be encouraged for various reasons, these have to be regulated according to the legislation set out by the European Union. In themselves, what these Directives strive to achieve are mainly the safety of the study subject and the protection of the investigators from serious consequences. This short article aims to give a brief overview of these changes to prospective investigators and hospital administrators.2006-01-01T00:00:00ZWar and population change in the Maltese context

Title: War and population change in the Maltese context
Authors: Savona-Ventura, Charles
Abstract: Warfare is associated with marked social consequences that directly and indirectly will influence the reproductive patterns of the population. The present analysis looks at the population changes that occurred during the three of the four major conflicts where the Maltese population was directly involved. The study confirms that one of the consequence of warfare in the Maltese context during the centuries was a reduction in birth rates that picked up again in the post-war period.2006-01-01T00:00:00ZHeadaches

Title: Headaches
Authors: Camilleri, Myriam
Abstract: A 30 year old lady was seen by her family doctor during a busy clinic complaining of three episodes of left-sided headache over the previous four months. The pain was usually throbbing in nature and it increased slowly in intensity over about an hour. She usually would have to lie down in a dark room to obtain some relief. Nausea, vomiting and blurred vision usually accompanied the headache. She had had headaches in the past but usually less severe and relieved by two to four paracetamol tablets per day. She reported no family history of headaches and had not started any new medication. What would you do and what issues does this consultation raise?2006-01-01T00:00:00ZAvulsion fracture of the Iliac Crest : a clinical and radiological evaluation 17 years later
