Abstract: This dissertation analyses the contents of II Giurnal Malti, a newspaper &#xD;
which appeared in Malta between 1864 and 1866. It also highlights the &#xD;
works of contemporary writers in this newspaper. An account of the &#xD;
friction which existed between rival newspapers is given, namely that &#xD;
between II Giurnal Malti and Bertoldu, Stenterello, II Portafoglio Maltese &#xD;
and The Maltese Observer. The historical and cultural background will be &#xD;
highlighted. However, specific attention will be given to the writings from &#xD;
II Giurnal Malti which are of literary value and which, very sadly are not so &#xD;
widely known.

Abstract: Absenteeism, as a problem, has always been connotated with the &#xD;
secondary sector, particularly with trade schools. Although a substantial &#xD;
number of research studies have been carried out in order to investigate &#xD;
this problem, yet up to now, absenteeism in primary schools has barely been &#xD;
considered as a problem by local authors. &#xD;
This study, which covers a cross section of schools in the Maltese &#xD;
islands, was carried out in such a way that those involved with absenteeism &#xD;
were consulted, namely: the pupils themselves, their teachers and head &#xD;
teachers as well as the Education Social Workers who deal with pupils &#xD;
having a problem of school attendance. Analysing the attendance records &#xD;
resulted in the identification of those pupils who absented excessively. In &#xD;
turn, these pupils' end of year results were obtained so as to see how &#xD;
attendance affected their scholastic performance. Furthermore, the &#xD;
underlying reasons for their excessive absence was investigated. The data &#xD;
obtained was analysed and interpreted accordingly. &#xD;
Finally, one must note that, according to this study, absenteeism in &#xD;
primary schools is a problem even though it does not affect different areas &#xD;
in the same manner.

    <title>The role of secondary school headteachers : a comparative study</title>

    <description>Title: The role of secondary school headteachers : a comparative study
Abstract: This work is a comparative study of the vision, values and goals that headteachers have in &#xD;
Area Secondary Schools and Junior Lyceums. It also investigates how they can &#xD;
contribute to school effectiveness through their leadership roles. &#xD;
Interviews were carried out with 2 Heads from Junior Lyceums, 2 Heads from Area &#xD;
Secondary schools and a College Head. The aim of the interviews was to gather &#xD;
information about the roles of Heads in Secondary Schools. Face-to-face interviews were &#xD;
preferred to questionnaires as this allowed spontaneity on behalf of the Heads. The &#xD;
interviews discussed topics such as reasons for becoming heads; careers before headship; &#xD;
visions, values and goals of the school; the part they played in effective teaching and &#xD;
learning: changes they would like to implement in the education system; limitations and &#xD;
problems they encountered in the running of the school. &#xD;
The interviews were analysed and a number of conclusions were arrived at. Although the &#xD;
standards of the schools under study were different, the key roles of Heads were common &#xD;
to all. This shows that there have been no particular changes in the position description of &#xD;
Heads although the expectations of the schools varied. All Heads stressed that strong &#xD;
leadership is essential in the running of the school. Training, various support structures, &#xD;
and more autonomy where other points raised by the Heads that require attention. Other &#xD;
recommendations were put forward and discussed.

    <title>The attitudes of state secondary school students towards physical education</title>

    <description>Title: The attitudes of state secondary school students towards physical education
Abstract: It can be noticed that the attitudes of local children as they &#xD;
begin secondary schooling towards P.E., could in general be &#xD;
described as being very enthusiastic. AlI of this seems to &#xD;
dwindle off towards the end of their secondary schooling. This &#xD;
research therefore concentrated on finding out why the attitude &#xD;
towards P.E. goes through this phase of change. A questionnaire &#xD;
was used to elicit information about students' perceptions &#xD;
towards P.E.. A sample of 560 students students, attending Junior &#xD;
Lyceums, Area Secondary Schools and Trade Schools have &#xD;
participated in the questionnaire. &#xD;
It was found out in this study that it is definitely true that &#xD;
the attitude of students change as they go through their &#xD;
secondary schooling. Junior students show a more favourable &#xD;
attitude towards P.E. Also, boys seem to be more willing to be &#xD;
involved in physical action, while girls seem to show more esteem &#xD;
for the subject than boys. OveralI, Trade School students show a &#xD;
more favourable attitude than students coming from other schools.
