Therapeutic drug monitoring of digoxin and its management

Title: Therapeutic drug monitoring of digoxin and its management
Authors: Marshall, Keith A.
Abstract: Digoxin, together with diuretics, constitutes the traditional approach to
the treatment of congestive heart failure. However, several serious
doubts have been cast in relation to the use of the drug, due to its narrow
therapeutic range. Monitoring digoxin blood levels should enable the
clinician to tailor the dose and produce a therapeutically-valid blood
concentration. However, questions could be raised regarding how much
information can be derived from serum digoxin concentrations which
cannot be inferred from clinical observation alone. Studies were carried out:
(1) to assess and verify the physician's reasons for requesting serum digoxin levels
(2) to investigate digoxin dosage regimens and routes of administration employed in a local health centre (3) to investigate inter- and intravariability in serum digoxin levels
for a population of geriatric patients and (4) to assess the predictive powers of a computerised system in determining serum digoxin levels.

Administration of medicines in the hospital

Title: Administration of medicines in the hospital
Authors: Mifsud, Suzanne
Abstract: The administration of medicines to the hospitalised patient is the result
of the thoughts and actions of every department within the hospital.
There are three important implications: 1. No department can perform the act of medication administration without prior preparation. 2. Medicines must be administered to the right patient at the right time, in the correct dose and form.3. Communication among all hospital staff involved in administering medicines is essential (Guourley et al ., 1986).

Detection evaluation and treatment of hyperlipidaemia in Malta

Title: Detection evaluation and treatment of hyperlipidaemia in Malta
Authors: Farrugia, Joan Anne
Abstract: The control of coronary artery disease depends primarily on its
prevention at an early stage. Researchers worldwide generally agree
that early prevention depends on the elimination or treatment of known
modifiable risk factors, among which hyperlipidaemia occupies a
central position. Study 1: The Maltese Practitioners Attitudes to Hyperlipidaemia
A survey served to assess the attitudes of Maltese practitioners (n=180)
towards the recognition and management of Hyperlipidaemia. The
practitioners were also asked to state their opinion towards the
introduction of cholesterol measuring instruments into local community
pharmacies.

Current practices in wound management at St. Luke’s hospital

Title: Current practices in wound management at St. Luke’s hospital
Authors: Ellul, Marianne
Abstract: In the past ten years, wound management has changed dramatically as a
result of new research into tissue repair and the factors affecting healing.
This has meant that some conventional wound care methods could well
have a detrimental effect on the rate of wound healing (Ferguson A.,
1988). Current practices in wound management at St. Luke's Hospital
(SLH) were investigated in order to determine the extent of usage of
traditional wound care products and in so doing identifying the potential
problems in a move towards modern wound management techniques.
