    <title>Dilapidated houses in Cottonera : taking Vittoriosa as a case study.</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/48236</link>
    <description>Title: Dilapidated houses in Cottonera : taking Vittoriosa as a case study.
Abstract: One of the primary purposes of a dwelling is to provide shelter for man from&#xD;
the hostile elements of his environment. Since the day man moved out of&#xD;
caves he developed forms of shelter which conscientiously reflected his needs,&#xD;
as conditioned by the particular context within which he lived.&#xD;
If dwellings are left unattended they will deteriorate in a cycle from newly&#xD;
built, to dilapidation and disrepair, leading to unfitness and the likelihood of&#xD;
deterioration.&#xD;
&#xD;
This process of dilapidation and deterioration is easily understood in general&#xD;
terms, though it is extremely vast in operation. All houses will eventually&#xD;
deteriorate but individual materials degrade at different rates, with the&#xD;
optimum frequency of replacement varying between materials. Each&#xD;
component of the above mentioned cycle will be subject to modification,&#xD;
depending on local factors, which involve the quality of the original design,&#xD;
materials and maintenance.&#xD;
&#xD;
In certain areas of the Maltese Islands there is an increasing problem of&#xD;
disrepair in the housing stock which necessitates immediate action.&#xD;
Chapter One of this dissertation describes the parameters of Healthy Housing&#xD;
according to the World Health Organization standards and later, this chapter&#xD;
presents a broad definition of a dilapidated dwelling. Having done this, one&#xD;
gets an immediate impression of the contrast between these two extremities.&#xD;
Chapter Two gives a contemporary overview of the problem of dilapidated&#xD;
dwellings in Cottonera, whilst taking Vittoriosa as a case study to illustrate the&#xD;
precarious situation in which several houses in Vittoriosa are in. In this&#xD;
chapter, one also finds a comprehensive historical account intended to&#xD;
promote an awareness that Vittoriosa together with the other two cities was&#xD;
not always in such a state of deterioration. Vittoriosa was indeed once a city&#xD;
of great wealth and prestige. The concluding paragraphs of this chapter point&#xD;
out the reasons why the houses in Vittoriosa became dilapidated. In Chapter&#xD;
Three the focus moves to the survey that was carried out in Vittoriosa and&#xD;
from which several statistical reports were concluded. The context of this&#xD;
dissertation is further developed in Chapter Four, which points out in detail all&#xD;
the remedial steps that could be taken to finally overcome the problem of&#xD;
dilapidated houses in Cottonera.

    <title>Nutrition information on labels.</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/48206</link>
    <description>Title: Nutrition information on labels.
Abstract: Today's fast developing world has opened infinite horizons for the food&#xD;
restricted. The need of identification of food has then arisen. Labeling has also&#xD;
been developed as a result of the expansion of the food industry. The label acts&#xD;
as a protection for the consumer as it provides identification. Identification of&#xD;
food has been provided by the presence of a label affixed to the food. In the&#xD;
past information on labels was limited, ,basically only the product name was&#xD;
inducted.. Other information was not listed as this was not required by law.&#xD;
Although labels helped to choose and promote the food, and to inform the consumer, these were also used to deceive the consumer in some cases as labels&#xD;
tend to be designed for more promotional purposes. This could be easily&#xD;
achieved, such .as by the use of special food characteristics statements or&#xD;
order to establish the. brand e.g. by the use of bright colors on the label. Other&#xD;
manufacturers tend to copy already established product labels in order to&#xD;
confuse the consumer. This suggested that product name was not enough.

    <title>Food control : food safety in airline catering.</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/48199</link>
    <description>Title: Food control : food safety in airline catering.
Abstract: Anyone who has flown on a commercial aircraft today, has come into contact with&#xD;
inflight food services, yet few have an understanding of the processes that are&#xD;
involved to provide wholesome food and beverages to the passenger. Few&#xD;
passengers realise that the provisioning of inflight food services is a highly&#xD;
complex task that is performed by a unique segment of the total food service&#xD;
industry. In the airline industry, time is money and the inflight food services are&#xD;
part of the race to meet the close time schedules characterising the airline&#xD;
industry's concern with passenger service.&#xD;
An introduction and explanation of the flight catering system, together with&#xD;
information about the catering for special dietary requirements, is followed by&#xD;
step by step procedures involved from the purchasing of food products to&#xD;
dispatching the meals to the aircrafts.&#xD;
With this dissertation the reader will get an idea about the basic procedures,&#xD;
involved in the local inflight catering industry.

    <title>Oil spills : marine disasters.</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/47947</link>
    <description>Title: Oil spills : marine disasters.
Abstract: Pollution may be defined as the release into the environment of substances or&#xD;
energy resulting in deleterious effects. Effects can be, harm to living resources, hazards to&#xD;
human health, hindrance to marine activities including fishing, impairment of quality for&#xD;
use of sea water and reduction of amenities.&#xD;
&#xD;
The study was focused on hydrocarbon pollution resulting from oil slicks, how oil&#xD;
is introduced into the marine environment, its reactions and how it effects species. The&#xD;
damage it could cause to human health is an important consideration. The study stated the&#xD;
plans of operation that can be offered by the Maltese Authorities in case of an oil slick in&#xD;
the Maltese Territorial waters. The study was mainly focused on accidents in the Maltese&#xD;
Territory, the risks in the area, and the Mediterranean as a whole. It also showed the&#xD;
relation between the international laws and regulations regarding marine pollution due to&#xD;
hydrocarbons leaking out from vessels and what legal actions could be taken. Laws and&#xD;
regulations were interpreted also as a prevention to avoid such disasters from happening&#xD;
and what considerations are taken before ships are able to fly the country's flag.&#xD;
