    <title>Ingrowing toenail and its treatment</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/46155</link>
    <description>Title: Ingrowing toenail and its treatment
Abstract: Introduction: Ingrowing toenail is almost exclusively a condition of the great toe&#xD;
and thus is rarely seen in the lesser toenails or finger nails. The occurrence rate&#xD;
is highest among young people with equal distribution among males and females.&#xD;
An ingrowing toenail begins as a localised inflammatory reaction to external&#xD;
forces on the margin of the nail plate. Once penetration of the epithelial tissue&#xD;
occurs infection ensues, abscess, chronic drainage, inflammation and granulation.&#xD;
Background study: This is the condition when a spike shoulder or serrated edge&#xD;
of the nail has pierced the epidermis of the sulcus and penetrated the dermal&#xD;
tissue. Initially it causes little inconvenience but as the nail grows the offending&#xD;
portion penetrates further to the tissue and promotes an acute inflammation in the&#xD;
surrounding soft-tissue which after becomes infected. There are two different&#xD;
treatments. First the podiatrist has to deal with the infection by giving antibiotics.&#xD;
After a week he can start the treatment by choosing between conservative or&#xD;
operative treatment. This study will analyse which sources of treatment offers the&#xD;
most successful removal of nail.&#xD;
Aim of the study: The aim of the study is to investigate the cause and the&#xD;
treatments and if possibly try to use safe and treatments which doesn't have side&#xD;
effects. It is also important to use the most effective treatment for the patient&#xD;
Literature review: Treatment effectiveness depends on the patient's general&#xD;
health and the severity of the condition.

    <title>The role of the podiatrist in the prevention of foot ulceration in patients with diabetes mellitus.</title>

    <description>Title: The role of the podiatrist in the prevention of foot ulceration in patients with diabetes mellitus.
Abstract: This project concerns the effects of diabetes mellitus, a lifelong metabolic disorder&#xD;
affecting a large number of people, and a disease which affects the approach of podiatrists&#xD;
to their patients, as it directly influences the way the patient is treated. An in-depth&#xD;
analysis of the physiological effects of the disease is given, illustrating how this would&#xD;
affect the patient's way of life. The effect of diabetes on the foot is given particular&#xD;
attention, showing how ulcers develop while classifying the different classes of ulcers. The&#xD;
various ways in which the patient could prevent the formation of these potentially&#xD;
dangerous ulcers. Various ways in which the patient could participate in his cure are&#xD;
illustrated, highlighting the importance of patient awareness about this disease, and how&#xD;
the increased patient participation could help the sufferers themselves reap benefits that&#xD;
would help in coping with the disease. Thus, it is shown that education is a principal asset&#xD;
in combating this disease.

    <title>Mycotic infections effecting the skin of the feet.</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/46143</link>
    <description>Title: Mycotic infections effecting the skin of the feet.
Abstract: The project consists of a general description of the nature, aetiology, diagnosis&#xD;
and management of dermatophyte and yeast infections which effect the foot.&#xD;
The purpose of this project is to create a study about these fungal infections and&#xD;
to do further investigation about their management though they are very common&#xD;
in Malta during warm weather owing to excessive heat.&#xD;
The literature in this project is taken from books, and journals about Podiatry.&#xD;
There are certain investigations about the diagnosis and management of the&#xD;
infections and comparison with other diseases. Diagnostic techniques are also&#xD;
included.&#xD;
This project also encounter the different types of treatments available for the&#xD;
management of fungal infections and also the effect of the treatment on patients&#xD;
suffering from mycotic infections in their feet.&#xD;
The discussion is focused on the effects of the different types of treatments used&#xD;
in Malta in clinical practice and how these effect the infections. The advices and&#xD;
prognosis of the infections are described and the effective results are also listed.

    <title>Heel pain : its aetiology and management.</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/46024</link>
    <description>Title: Heel pain : its aetiology and management.
Abstract: The objectives of this project is to evaluate the aetiology and management of heel pain. The&#xD;
literature review revealed the aetiology, diagnosis and management of each factor and is&#xD;
discussed Different kinds of treatment can be used but many authors revealed conservative&#xD;
therapy is effective without side effects unlike surgical treatment.&#xD;
By doing this project, I learned more about heel pain. It is very important to educate the&#xD;
patients how to take care of their feet by attending for a visit at the podology clinic.&#xD;
Another important thing is that a leaflet of information about heel pain, must be given to&#xD;
every patient to make people more aware about foot problems, and how these problems&#xD;
could be prevented.&#xD;
Recommendations are listed at the end of this project to help the patient in the prevention of&#xD;
heel pain. The most effective treatment of heel pain must be targeted toward the proper&#xD;
diagnosis of the problem. It is of great importance that a multidisciplinary teamwork is&#xD;
present when treating heel pain.
