    <title>The discipline of young people in a production environment : a case study</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/123147</link>
    <description>Title: The discipline of young people in a production environment : a case study
Abstract: This work sets out to investigate the individual and organisational characteristics &#xD;
that may influence the behaviour and performance of young people at work and to &#xD;
examine the current disciplinary procedures being adopted by the organisation and &#xD;
their impact on the individual. &#xD;
Particular reference is made to the Plastic Injection Department within the &#xD;
Brandstatter Group - Malta after considering the high number of disciplinary actions &#xD;
issued to young employees compared to adults. For the purpose of this study young &#xD;
people within the 17 to 25 years age bracket were the main respondents. A &#xD;
questionnaire distributed to the young employees and interviews held with the &#xD;
section leaders elicited vital information about the present situation within this &#xD;
department. This enabled me to make suggestions for a more effective leadership &#xD;
style and the vocational development of the young people concerned.

    <title>Students' motivations for entering the medical degree course at the University of Malta</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/123067</link>
    <description>Title: Students' motivations for entering the medical degree course at the University of Malta
Abstract: Choosing a course at University is difficult, and the influences other people make in &#xD;
our lives is hard to avoid. This study attempts to explore the various motivations &#xD;
students have when choosing an MD course at the University of Malta. &#xD;
Questionnaires were distributed to students in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years. At the same &#xD;
time interviews were done to some of their lecturers to gain more insight into &#xD;
students' motivations for an MD course at the University of Malta. &#xD;
In this study one can see that the family has a strong influence in the students' choice &#xD;
when facing a decision like entering a course at University level. This study also &#xD;
indicates that a large percentage of students who enter a Medical Degree course at the &#xD;
University of Malta have attended Church schools at both secondary and sixth form &#xD;
level. Students have also shown in this study that money was not a major issue when &#xD;
they chose this course. The fact that they can help other people by their profession and &#xD;
the fact that people put trust in them were of a much greater importance. &#xD;
It also resulted that having a family member already in the medical field was a &#xD;
positive influence for these students to choose the MD course. &#xD;
On the other hand male and female gender was not an issue since there were &#xD;
approximately the same number of students. The project concludes with a number of &#xD;
recommendations for youth workers in schools where they can give some advice to &#xD;
the adolescent pupils. A youth worker who works in a school can create a healthy &#xD;
relationship with students along the years, and therefore can be of major help when &#xD;
students are faced with important and difficult choices like choosing a course at &#xD;
University.

    <title>Television and the adolescent viewer</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/123065</link>
    <description>Title: Television and the adolescent viewer
Abstract: Television occupies a large part of our time from childhood to adolescence, and to &#xD;
adulthood. It is seen as a means of entertainment and education offering current &#xD;
information and also knowledge about the world. It also presents other images which can &#xD;
be considered inappropriate for the adolescent viewer. This has prompted my research to &#xD;
explore the effects of TV and their possible implications on young viewers. &#xD;
The study considers a section of Maltese post-secondary students and tries to establish &#xD;
any patterns of television viewing among adolescents, their programme preferences, &#xD;
motivation to watch television and how programmes might effect youth in their everyday &#xD;
decisions. It also explores character identification between the viewer and the television &#xD;
characters portrayed and what possible effects this has on the viewer; it also touches on &#xD;
sexuality as portrayed on television programmes and its possible effects on adolescents. &#xD;
The information for this survey was gathered by way of a questionnaire distributed &#xD;
among five post-secondary schools, followed by interviews with a selection of focus &#xD;
groups where the adolescents could express and discuss their views. The schools were &#xD;
represented by a private/church school, two government schools, a technical school and &#xD;
a health care school. &#xD;
Research results seem to indicate that adolescents spend less time watchmg television &#xD;
than what is commonly perceived. The questionnaire aims to give a broad indication on &#xD;
adolescents' programme preferences and their reasons for watching TV. The interviews &#xD;
seem to indicate that constant viewing eventually has an effect on adolescents' choices &#xD;
and decisions in everyday life. When asked whether television programmes portrayed life &#xD;
realistically or not, many said that they were uncertain.

    <title>Are young people in the Armed Forces of Malta healthier than their civilian counterparts?</title>
    <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/122935</link>
    <description>Title: Are young people in the Armed Forces of Malta healthier than their civilian counterparts?
Abstract: This dissertation aims at gathering information about the life style of young people aged &#xD;
between eighteen and thirty- four years of age, that serve in the Armed Forces of Malta. It &#xD;
also seeks to find out whether the problem of overweight and obesity is present within the &#xD;
ranks of the Armed Forces and if it compares to that of the general public. &#xD;
This dissertation is also intended to shed light on the usage of alcohol and tobacco &#xD;
products by these respondents serving in the Armed Forces of Malta. &#xD;
When analyzing data it transpired that young people in the military are a reproduction of &#xD;
the young people in society in general. Hence the problem of overweight and obesity is &#xD;
also present within the Armed Forces of Malta when the latter should be an example of &#xD;
how young people should lead a healthier life style. A youth worker employed within the &#xD;
Armed Forces ranks could help the younger generation by providing Health Education and &#xD;
Health Promotion.
