      <title>Design of an assistive multifunctional kitchen tool for one-handed users</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/109341</link>
      <description>Title: Design of an assistive multifunctional kitchen tool for one-handed users
Abstract: The goal of this project is to design an assistive multifunctional kitchen tool for &#xD;
one-handed users. This report starts by discussing the different factors that drive &#xD;
the loss of independency, and how this effects the daily task of meal preparation. &#xD;
The goal of the final product design is to improve one’s mental and physical health &#xD;
and to allow the user to regain their independence. This is done by firstly&#xD;
identifying the design problem. The second design stage is to determine the &#xD;
customer requirements and systematically transform them into product design &#xD;
specifications. The final design stage allows for the creation of numerous viable &#xD;
concepts and where one final model is scientifically selected through established&#xD;
design tools. Further design enhancements are carried out in the embodiment &#xD;
design stage. Throughout the whole design development, several decisions were &#xD;
taken which led to the formation of the final product design, which in turn is the &#xD;
solution to the initial design problem identified in the first stage.

      <title>Managing a healthier lifestyle with a self-heating and space-saving lunchbox</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/109340</link>
      <description>Title: Managing a healthier lifestyle with a self-heating and space-saving lunchbox
Abstract: The main objective of this project is to create a product that will encourage &#xD;
consumers to prepare their own meals in order to maintain a healthy eating &#xD;
lifestyle and to inspire individuals to engage in pro-environmental behaviour in &#xD;
their everyday lives. This is done through the development of a self-heating and &#xD;
space-saving lunchbox prototype. Throughout the research the impact of &#xD;
nutrition on human health, as well as barriers that make choosing the healthy &#xD;
alternative challenging, were identified. This, along with the take-out food &#xD;
industry’s negative environmental impact, revealed a design opportunity that &#xD;
seemed ripe to be addressed. Keeping in mind the importance of hygiene that the &#xD;
Covid-19 pandemic has clearly proven, the resultant prototype was designed to &#xD;
assist individuals in maintaining personal hygiene practices as well as to heat up &#xD;
one's healthy meal at an optimal temperature without the need of resorting to &#xD;
community microwave ovens. In addition, considering the significant &#xD;
environmental damage and waste management concerns caused by single-use &#xD;
take-away products, users will be encouraged to reject unsustainable goods by &#xD;
being provided and equipped with sustainable, reusable and space-saving cutlery &#xD;
and lunchboxes. A smart material was employed to create an innovative solution &#xD;
as well as to establish an emotional connection with consumers.

      <title>The design of a modular compact irrigation system</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/109339</link>
      <description>Title: The design of a modular compact irrigation system
Abstract: The main objective of this project is to offer a sustainable solution for home &#xD;
gardens to promote pro-environmental behaviour, whilst diminishing the effect &#xD;
of food deserts in urbanised communities where there is a lack of access to &#xD;
nutritious yet affordable food. This is done through the development of a &#xD;
prototype which will allow users to grow herbs and other plants, even in smaller &#xD;
urban environments which would otherwise put a strain on available resources &#xD;
like space and water. Overcoming this issue will positively contribute towards the &#xD;
well-being of the user by promoting a healthier lifestyle, as well as encouraging &#xD;
pro-environmental behaviour in the user’s everyday life. Throughout the &#xD;
research, problems regarding nutrition which are introduced through rapid &#xD;
urbanisation and smaller urban environments were quite evident. This, along &#xD;
with the increase in health consciousness and trends which align with the users’ &#xD;
values, revealed a design opportunity keen to be addressed. Other factors which &#xD;
are important to the consumers, such as compactness and ease of use, were &#xD;
identified as imperative aspects that the design must align with. Therefore, the &#xD;
resultant prototype makes use of several modules which fit together to create a &#xD;
modular compact irrigation system. The implementation of a mini-dehumidification                                      &#xD;
system was used as a method of water generation applied to a&#xD;
hydroponic system of growing plants.
