Title: Fidelis et Verax : Essays in honour of His Grace Mgr Charles J. Scicluna on the tenth anniversary of his episcopal ordination
Authors: Attard, Stefan M.; Berry, John Anthony
Abstract: The publication of this celebratory volume takes its cue from this motto, and it revolves around three pivotal convictions. First, the very motto chosen by His Grace is a Scriptural text which is deserving of deep reflection, both because it speaks about Jesus Christ’s identity and character, and also because it furnishes a model for everyone to imitate, not only in some grand and momentous contexts as was the case with the awe-inspiring rider, but also in the more ordinary moments of life. Second, this publication is an expression of the filial respect towards and admiration of Archbishop Scicluna for his own search for the Truth, not merely as an abstract concept, but more so as a Person (i.e. Jesus). His faithfulness and commitment to the Lord permeate his ministry and are a source of inspiration to many. Third, it was our intention to provide the Archbishop with scholarly articles that would be instrumental in his ministry as the principal pastor of Malta, in the hope that they would enlighten him and spur him on to continue to appropriate for himself the noble title he chose to mark his exercise of authority with love.

Title: Foreword
Authors: Galea Curmi, Joseph
Abstract: It is so fitting that the Faculty of Theology within the University of Malta is publishing this celebratory volume containing interesting articles by diverse contributors on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of Archbishop Charles Jude Scicluna. The articles are organized in six sections according to their subject matter; the first section concerns the Archbishop directly, and the following sections discuss themes that are intimately connected to his ministry: the word of truth, a journey along the centuries, the value of the human person, the episcopal ministry and, finally, the way the Church should be faithful and true – fidelis et verax – which is the motto he had chosen as bishop. The contributions are well suited for this publication in honour of Archbishop Scicluna, since they are the fruit of wisdom and research.

Servitor et praefectus

Title: Servitor et praefectus
Authors: Vella, George
Abstract: Following months of gentle coercion to accept the role of President of the Republic, in the last weeks approaching 4 April, when a new Head of State is usually installed, and following certain negotiations to elicit political commitments on issues on which I have entrenched positions, I finally accepted to embrace this responsibility. I realised the fact that taking on a five-year commitment at 77 was not easy. Four years earlier I had a triple cardiac bypass, which thankfully left me with no disability whatsoever. I felt I still had a lot to contribute to my country and the more I thought about it, the more committed I felt. In the days preceding the official installation, I was further encouraged by being informed that Members of Parliament from the Opposition side were also willing to back my nomination. This made me concentrate on the message I wanted to convey in my inauguration ceremony. The speech I prepared somehow flowed out with my thoughts and eventually portrayed all I had ever wished to do, but for obvious reasons beyond my control could not accomplish.
