Title: Editorial : the loss of Gozo’s distinctiveness
Abstract: The speed with which the construction industry
is growing in Gozo, and the effect of this on the
character and culture of Gozo are often the subject
of conversation when discussing the future of Gozo.
Economic development often leads to cultural
changes, which sometimes strongly impinge of
the character of the country in which they occur.
Undoubtedly, such effects are happening in Gozo,
and many observers argue that as a result, Gozo is
losing its character, which has often been associated
with the island’s charm.

Villa Rundle – not only trees and plants

Title: Villa Rundle – not only trees and plants
Abstract: Known by many Gozitans as il-Mall, the public
garden of Villa Rundle, located in the heart of
Victoria dates back to around 1915. It was named
after its founder and governor during that time,
General Leslie Rundle. It has been upgraded several
times during these hundred years and now features
over 100 different species of trees, both native (e.g.
Holm oak, Dwarf Palm tree, Sundarac Gum tree)
and exotic (e.g. Jacaranda, Hibiscus, Kurrajong
and Norfolk pine trees), as well a large array of
seasonal flowering plants. But lurking at the base
of some trunk, through wooden mulch, protruding
out from grassy lawns or in any imaginable corner,
we find different and more curious living organisms
to admire – fungi (often referred to as mushrooms).

Title: The Gozo Channel tragedy that wiped out twenty-three lives
Abstract: News that a Gozo luzzu
had capsized the previous evening taking a load of
passengers with it was penetrating and devastating
every Gozitan household. The Ċittadella clock had
just struck six, vividly remembered Nanna twentyfive
years later, when for once in her lifetime she
told me this tragic story. It immediately crossed her
mind that her beloved Ġużeppi, who had promised
her to be home for the long weekend, had not yet
arrived. [Excerpt]
