      <title>Undocumented immigration : an increased source of crime rates in the Maltese society?</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/86846</link>
      <description>Title: Undocumented immigration : an increased source of crime rates in the Maltese society?
Abstract: The issue of illegal immigration, although relatively not a new issue to the country of Malta, &#xD;
has lately gained in its popularity; it is in present time, one of the countries' hot issues which &#xD;
now, for more than a decade has been the cause for various debates, such debates being both &#xD;
foreign and domestic in nature. &#xD;
This paper will tackle mainly the domestic side of the issue, a concept which has also been &#xD;
carried out in much larger countries such as the U.K. and the U.S. where the conducted study &#xD;
will analyze the impact of illegal immigration activity within the Maltese Society. &#xD;
In this paper, a series of events will be portrayed leading to the current state of Malta's &#xD;
undocumented immigration situation, first starting with their arrival, detention and their &#xD;
achievement I rejection of status to the final stage of establishing a new community within the &#xD;
Maltese society. &#xD;
Being a relatively new concept for the Maltese society, various are the perceptions taken with &#xD;
regards to the presence of undocumented immigrants, leading one to question whether &#xD;
undocumented immigration contributes to being an increased source of crime rates within &#xD;
Malta? &#xD;
Consequently, how can any criminal activity be attributed as being an effect deriving from the &#xD;
incoming number of undocumented immigration? &#xD;
Any criminal activity, addressed in this paper, is any activity which infringes the Laws of &#xD;
Malta and could originate from any individual irrelevant of his/her race, skin colour, &#xD;
nationality, education and/or financial status.

      <title>Illegal fishing activities in Malta's maritime jurisdiction and surrounding waters : criminal activity and its effect on the environment</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/86775</link>
      <description>Title: Illegal fishing activities in Malta's maritime jurisdiction and surrounding waters : criminal activity and its effect on the environment
Abstract: The primary aim of this study is to give a clear picture of this particular crime, the people behind the scenes, their objectives and to show that this profitable crime is doing a lot of harm to our environment. Using reference studies which were carried out by professional researchers in many areas of the oceans including the Mediterranean Sea I would also like to make people (especially Maltese people) aware of the illegal, irregular and unreported fishing (IUU) because a lot of people are still unaware of the enforced struggle that some marine life experiences due to these activities. My findings are focused specifically on the Maltese surrounding water that is the Mediterranean Sea and the Maltese fishing industry. Other issues regarding illegal fishing will be brought out during the study as every situation and act is linked with each other but the main aims are the following. &#xD;
• Give a clear picture of this criminal activity (inc. financial gains, illegal technique and motives) &#xD;
• The impacts on the environment &#xD;
• The impacts on the fishermen (livelihood, leisure) &#xD;
• Find out how this criminal activity is being tackled &#xD;
When this study is finished one should have a clear picture of what is going on in the Maltese waters as regards to illegal fishing including the illegal techniques that are being used, the fishing vessels which are being used and effects on the fish stocks. The study will also show how and what the governments and the Non Government Organizations (NGO) are doing to reduce these criminal activities including laws, agreements, regulations and the monitoring.

      <title>Community policing in Marsaxlokk</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/86770</link>
      <description>Title: Community policing in Marsaxlokk
Abstract: This dissertation is titled 'Community Policing in Marsaxlokk.' The main notion of this &#xD;
dissertation is to verify if law-abiding citizens living in the southern village of Marsaxlokk, &#xD;
actually agree with the promotion of community policing in their locality and also if they desire &#xD;
to form part of this alliance between the community and the police. After weighing both my &#xD;
findings through literature and through my research methods, I will confirm if community &#xD;
policing is in fact a worthwhile and effective tool in the Marsaxlokk, or not. To complete this &#xD;
study a qualitative approach was selected and interviews were used to gather knowledge from &#xD;
people working in particular fields and also the general public.
