Through a transdisciplinary approach, the study combines existing and new knowledge to fill in historical gaps. The toponyms of the two islands were shaped by the linguistic exchange between cultures in the Mediterranean region and on the Maltese islands. Analyzing local place-names in everyday language has preserved history within communities for millennia. Studying the toponym Għawdex reveals its evolution over time, serving as a record of history and safeguarding the island's original purpose and name. Also, the name of the ancient destination port led to it replacing the Phoenician name for the island, but not its significance and ongoing role as a safe haven. This study shows how island toponyms can provide further insights into historical events and the development of language in ancient eras.
