This form of tourism is not available everywhere, and many travellers are unfamiliar with the concept. In this study, Birgu is taken as a case study to explore whether slow tourism associated with cultural heritage could serve as an alternative model of sustainable development in Malta and whether tourists are interested and aware of such a term. The primary conclusion that results from the research conducted is that slow tourism associated with cultural heritage can serve as an alternative model of sustainable development tourism in Malta, and specifically Birgu, due to various reasons, including the nature of touristic sites and the infrastructure in place already. Additionally, it was also concluded that tourists coming to Malta are interested in experiencing the Islands adopting a slow tourism approach that highlights Malta’s cultural heritage, bringing along with it a number of key advantages, even from an environmental and sustainable point of view. Data was gathered through a mixed method approach, using qualitative and quantitative data collection. For the qualitative part, interviews were held with stakeholders, while for the quantitative part, research questionnaires were distributed to tourists in Birgu. The sample chosen for the questionnaires mainly consisted of people who were on holiday on their own with their family or friends rather than with a tour guide and a large group of tourists. As technology continues to evolve, many hotels are turning to smart systems such as mobile check-ins, keyless entry, smart lighting, and virtual assistants to improve service delivery and meet changing guest expectations. The main aim of this study is to better understand how these technologies affect guest satisfaction, convenience, and overall experience during their stay. Using a quantitative approach, data was collected through an online survey completed by hotel guests who had interacted with smart technologies. The findings show that smart technologies are generally seen in a positive light, especially when it comes to making hotel stays more comfortable, efficient, and modern. However, the results also point to some challenges, including concerns about data privacy and the fear that technology might reduce human interaction in hotels. Overall, this study highlights the importance of finding a balance between technological innovation and maintaining personal service in hospitality. The dissertation concludes with recommendations for hotel managers on how to successfully integrate smart technologies in ways that enhance guest satisfaction while still preserving the human touch that is central to the hospitality experience. Malta’s longstanding role as a film location, paired with its rich heritage, provides a unique case for examining both the benefits and risks of film-induced tourism. The study adopts a qualitative methodology, using semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from the film, tourism, and cultural heritage sectors to gather insights. Findings show that while screen tourism significantly boosts Malta’s international visibility and enriches the visitor experience, its development remains limited due to a lack of strategic planning, coordination, and supporting products. Although there are concerns about physical damage and authenticity loss, film exposure can also raise awareness and provide supplementary funding for conservation. The research concludes that screen tourism, if properly managed, offers strong potential as a culturally sensitive and economically beneficial niche tourism product. Its success depends on developing coherent policy, enhancing stakeholder collaboration, and creating immersive, experiences. This study addresses four research questions to do so: two are answered through existing literature, whereas the remaining two are answered using qualitative research to provide additional insight. Open ended interviews are utilised as the main method of acquiring data pertaining to the research gaps identified in this study. Furthermore, thematic analysis was used as the primary method to distinguishing similar and contrasting themes found in the interviews conducted. The findings and analysis of this study confirm that Malta has gained an increased reputation when it comes to festivals and events alike in comparison to other islands and locations in the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, stakeholder input leans towards unsustainable growth in the scene despite exponential growth over the past 10-15 years. Various limiting challenges relating to sustainability in the scene of festivals in Malta are identified amongst the opinions and beliefs of the relevant stakeholders. The conclusion and recommendations chapter rounds up all the information gathered through stakeholder input and existing literature and identifies potential implementable solutions to align the scene according to greater sustainability protocol.
