      <title>A portal to Maltese medical e-articles : abstracts and indexes</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/1771</link>
      <description>Title: A portal to Maltese medical e-articles : abstracts and indexes
Abstract: Hundreds of academic articles are published in Malta each year. The Malta Medical Journal (previously published as Maltese Medical Journal) provides the means for local scientists and medical professionals to publish high-quality papers related to their research and findings.&#xD;
This work is focused in identifying the procedures followed when compiling abstracts and indexes for journal articles, the variety of possible options available in assigning subject headings and classifications and the importance of producing comprehensive metadata and presenting it in a standard format. It also focuses on digitizing practices, the means of dissemination and the intellectual property rights problems faced with open access.&#xD;
Through this work the authors were able to provide researchers in the health sector, the means to search through the articles published in the Maltese Medical Journal between 1989 and 2000 by providing abstracts and indexes for these articles. Through this work it is also possible to access the articles in full text.

      <title>Challenges and opportunities in state primary schools of the Maltese Islands</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/1766</link>
      <description>Title: Challenges and opportunities in state primary schools of the Maltese Islands
Abstract: This long assignment presented here concerns the state of the Maltese government primary&#xD;
school libraries. It speaks about past history and the work that has been done, as well as the&#xD;
present situation, and what can be done in the near future. A survey was conducted with&#xD;
primary students, primary teachers and volunteers who take care or use various primary&#xD;
school libraries in order to get to know their ideas about library matters. One also finds a&#xD;
chapter detailing the situation of libraries in foreign countries, these being England, Canada&#xD;
and Brazil. The last chapter deals with what can be done here in Malta.

      <title>A professional Collection Development Policy for the Malta Central Public Library</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/1765</link>
      <description>Title: A professional Collection Development Policy for the Malta Central Public Library
Abstract: The concept of Collection Development Policy (CDP), in particular with public libraries&#xD;
in Malta is not common. The author aims to bring librarians aware of CDPs. In fact, in&#xD;
this study, the author investigated the actual situation of the Central Public Library&#xD;
(CPL) in Floriana with regards to the CDP. This could be possible by gathering primary&#xD;
data from the Deputy Librarian (DL) and the library users themselves. The researcher&#xD;
interviews the DL and carries out questionnaires with the users. In this way, the author&#xD;
can have a clear idea and perspective from the library stakeholders. The DL gives a&#xD;
clear picture of the situation and future plans. From the questionnaires, it seems that the&#xD;
users have different opinions about the CPL's collection. The results of the&#xD;
questionnaires are presented in tables. Manchester Public Library and Biblioteca&#xD;
Salabrosa's CDP are compared and contrasted so that a model can be established and&#xD;
then a draft CDP for the CPL is developed. It is concluded that financial constraints&#xD;
cannot be an excuse for not developing a CDP, in fact, it is felt necessary to develop a&#xD;
formal CDP.

      <title>Floriana Central Public Library's services for children : the current state and the way forward</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/1762</link>
      <description>Title: Floriana Central Public Library's services for children : the current state and the way forward
Abstract: This study examines the library needs of children and the extent to which they&#xD;
are being met by the existing services at the Floriana Central Public Library,&#xD;
besides recommending future library services and improvements. Desk&#xD;
research about what foreign countries offer in the children’s library sector was&#xD;
also accomplished. Furthermore, current children’s library services in the&#xD;
Floriana library are here discussed and then the data provided by this study&#xD;
was used to conduct a questionnaire on the local user expectations of the&#xD;
children’s library service.&#xD;
An on-location questionnaire was conducted among children aged 0-11 years&#xD;
and their parents/ guardians who use the current children’s library services,&#xD;
where 225 users participated. A significant result showed that children’s library&#xD;
services are still essential to the users in this technological world. The&#xD;
conclusion was that the Floriana Central Public Library, as the main children’s&#xD;
library, should be the foremost in offering new services, events and&#xD;
programmes to all its users while also searching for ways to encourage new&#xD;
users to enrol in the library and participate in what the library offers.
