Title: Solitary fibrous tumour of the nose and nasopharynx
Authors: Pace Balzan, Jacqueline; Fenech, Anthony G.; DeGaetano, James
Abstract: A case of solitary fibrous tumour of the nasal cavity is reported. These tumours, rare in the nose, are believed to be similar to fibrous mesotheliomas of the pleural cavity. The main presenting symptom is that of unilateral nasal obstruction and diagnosis is made on histological examination of the lesion. These tumours have to be distinguished from other spindle-cell tumours of the nasal cavity and sinuses.

Title: Seronegative spondyloarthropathies : a review : part II: genetics and pathogenesis
Authors: Borg, Andrew A.; Dawes, Peter T.; Hothersall, T.E.
Abstract: In none of the spondyloarthropathies is the pathogenesis well understood. Much of the investigation into the aetio-pathogenesis of these diseases has focused on the association with HLA-B27 and the known triggering potential of certain infectious agents. In this article the author describes that the HLA linked genes which is subdivided into three groups, class I, class II and class III, which are structurally and functionally distinct from each other.

Title: Quality assurance
Authors: Cauchi, Maurice N.
Abstract: The concept of quality assurance refers more specifically to the process of objectifying and clearly enunciating goals, and providing means of assessing the outcomes. In this article the author mentions four fundamental elements of quality assurance which should be applied in the medical profession in Malta. These elements should relate to professional performance, resource utilisation, risk management and patient satisfaction. The aim of the medical professionals in Malta is to provide the best medical practice possible of which the patient may be truly satisfied.

Atmospheric sulphur dioxide pollution in Malta : a preliminary study

Title: Atmospheric sulphur dioxide pollution in Malta : a preliminary study
Authors: Vella, Alfred J.; Caruana, Simon; Demanuele, Joseph
Abstract: The results of a preliminary survey of the air quality in Malta during May-December 1990 with respect to sulphur dioxide are presented. One-hour-average S02 concentrations as high as 320 ug m-3 have been measured from areas proximate to the Marsa power station. The concentration of S02 in ambient air was found to be strongly dependent on atmospheric conditions and especially on wind direction. At Paola, measured concentrations varied from below the detection limit of 25 ug m-3 to about 160 ug m-3. These preliminary results suggest that specific areas in Malta which are close to the Marsa power station may have an air pollution problem which is significantly more pronounced than that in other areas. The results also indicate the need for a thorough air monitoring programme which would allow the pollution problem to be assessed more accurately and to be followed continually.
