      <title>An exercise in practical criticism : "Owl"</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/24109</link>
      <description>Title: An exercise in practical criticism : "Owl"
Abstract: George Macbeth's owl does not have a mortarboard on top of its&#xD;
head. It does not symbolize wisdom, as generations of undergraduates&#xD;
were led to believe when they proudly pinned the small enamelled&#xD;
badges in the figure of an owl onto their lapels. To George Macbeth,&#xD;
Owl is a predator, guided by precise but automatic responses collectively&#xD;
called instinct. The only knowledge Owl possesses is that of the&#xD;
eternal cycle of hunger - violence - satisfaction.</description>
