      <title>Reinterpreting colour-field and landscape artworks : an investigation in multi-disciplinary ways of creating and experiencing colour and sculpture</title>

      <description>Title: Reinterpreting colour-field and landscape artworks : an investigation in multi-disciplinary ways of creating and experiencing colour and sculpture
Abstract: This research explores and investigates whether landscape and colour-field artworks&#xD;
could be reinterpreted effectively through the use of digital stereoscopic painting,&#xD;
video, projection and printing methods in an attempt to enhance illusions of depth and&#xD;
flatness. This is done through the study of various fields of knowledge primarily&#xD;
neurology, stereography, cartography, landscape and colour theory. The study focuses&#xD;
on bringing these areas together in an attempt to successfully create chromostereoscopic&#xD;
colour-field artworks which reinterpret a specific landscape and can be&#xD;
viewed in three-dimensions when viewed with appropriated 3D glasses. Another&#xD;
priority is to place this research in the contemporary art context by studying the&#xD;
implications of experiencing abstract landscape reinterpretations in today‘s modern&#xD;
society. Specific methods are studied and developed by merging together stereoscopic&#xD;
technology and digital painting techniques. This research shows that chromostereoscopic&#xD;
colour-fields could be used to create optical illusions which reinterpret&#xD;
the three-dimensional qualities of topographic landscapes.

      <title>Replicating life : an exploration of the traditional family photo album and the reenactment of photos in contemporary art</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/27013</link>
      <description>Title: Replicating life : an exploration of the traditional family photo album and the reenactment of photos in contemporary art
Abstract: This dissertation seeks to investigate the role of the intervention on photographs in&#xD;
contemporary art and to contemplate how the value of the family photo album alters&#xD;
through time. It is also a further exploration on the outcome of false memories that can&#xD;
be evoked by photographs.&#xD;
The findings are the result of questionnaires and research relating to these subjects. The&#xD;
first part of this dissertation is dedicated to the study of a number of aspects linked to the&#xD;
importance of the family photo album. Significant information and studies relating to family&#xD;
photographs were documented throughout this research. Results have led to the issue of&#xD;
how false memories are easily evoked through certain photographs; those displayed in&#xD;
the family album and also those that are manipulated in certain ways. Thus, what started&#xD;
off as a study of the connection between photography and memory developed into a selfexploration&#xD;
of personal photographs.

      <title>Living autism : an immersive learning experience</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/27012</link>
      <description>Title: Living autism : an immersive learning experience
Abstract: The project brings together an inter-faculty experience and expertise from the&#xD;
areas of education, ICT and digital arts to provide an alternative experience&#xD;
in teacher training. In the past decade, in Malta there has been a drive to&#xD;
provide a more inclusive education experience.&#xD;
Teachers in the classroom need to be able to relate with children having&#xD;
different levels of abilities, including those lying on the autism spectrum. My&#xD;
proposal for this project is to bring a different narrative to a specific audience.&#xD;
One of the challenges, which teachers are facing in classrooms that have&#xD;
opened their doors to inclusion, is that of trying to understand and empathise&#xD;
with an autistic learner.&#xD;
Autism is a very complex condition that can manifest itself in a number of&#xD;
ways related to behaviour, communication and relationship with others.&#xD;
Parents of autistic children most often describe how difficult it is for someone&#xD;
who has never had the experience of living with an autistic child, to&#xD;
understand and empathise with how their children perceive the world around&#xD;
them. I believe that despite teacher training, teachers as well as learners go&#xD;
to class largely unprepared for the arrival of an autistic classmate because&#xD;
they cannot fully visualise the experience that a person with that condition&#xD;
lives through. Through this virtual experience we want to support a more&#xD;
sensorial approach to developing empathy with the condition of autism in a classroom setting. The scope of this project is to develop and deliver an app&#xD;
that combined with a VR headset can take the users through a journey into&#xD;
the experiences of an autistic child in a classroom. Using narratives from&#xD;
parents of autistic children as well as experts in the field of autism and&#xD;
learning with autism, this project will focus on re-creating the classroom&#xD;
experience as perceived from the autistic learner’s perceptions that include&#xD;
sights, sounds, actions and interactions.&#xD;
With new technology there is always some kind of Euphoria. This project&#xD;
aims at looking past that euphoria and into ways I can create a narrative for&#xD;
VR. Using sound, this production aims at keeping the user engaged in the&#xD;
narrative while exploring their surrounding and enjoying the spectacle that&#xD;
VR has to offer.

      <title>If you are not experiencing it, you are not understanding it! : using virtual reality to understand migrants</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/27011</link>
      <description>Title: If you are not experiencing it, you are not understanding it! : using virtual reality to understand migrants
Abstract: Classes are becoming increasingly multi ethnic and it is often the case that&#xD;
teachers are only trained to handle these new realities via textbooks. This project&#xD;
involves getting teachers and their pupils to undergo a virtual reality (VR)&#xD;
experience, which will narrate the story of a migrant child; through the mundane&#xD;
activities of a classroom setting. The whole experience lasts eight minutes per&#xD;
user, however we envisage that with the use of VR, it will leave a long lasting&#xD;
imprint on them, hence conveying a powerful message. It is well known that&#xD;
shared perspectives breed understanding and this is what we’re trying to achieve.&#xD;
So far, we could only do so through audio-visual experiences such as videos,&#xD;
books, etc. By following the life of these people, we can get a taste of what their&#xD;
life is. However, VR represents a huge leap forward when it comes to&#xD;
experiencing compassion. It is about seeing the world through their eyes, even&#xD;
reading and listening to what goes through their mind. The VR headset can easily&#xD;
become an empathy machine capable of influencing the perception of the users.&#xD;
The unrest in Syria, Libya and other countries, which are maybe too far away&#xD;
from our reality, will have a global, devastating effect if not managed properly.&#xD;
On the other hand, we have a generation of people who do not read newspapers&#xD;
and skip news bulletins so we have to entice them in some way or another, hence&#xD;
the venturing into VR journalism. Finally, the project will be studying the impact&#xD;
of this technology with teachers and their pupils in order to document the long&#xD;
lasting effect of such an experience over users (Camilleri, Scicluna, Briffa, Dingli,&#xD;
&amp; Camilleri, 2016).
