Authors: Fenech, Michael Abstract: This paper provides a background against which preventive media campaigns can be evaluated. The role of TV in media campaigns, with a particular focus on programmes aimed at children, is discussed. The author also proposes a local, children's TV production, 'OWKEJ!', as an example of media use in preventive campaigns. The declared aims of the programme and the producers' interpretations of these aims are examined in light of the precept that children's TV can be a powerful tool in the service of preventive media campaign planners and implementers. Finally, potential developments in the media are considered. Measures taken must be holistic in their approach - addressing the whole person in various environments. That professionals should be involved in the primary prevention of substance abuse is acknowledged. The question remains "what is meant by the term 'professional' and which professionals should be involved?" This paper examines these issues and also proposes that pharmacists' practice of, and research in, substance abuse prevention is a suitable model for the multidisciplinary interventions of other professionals in this field.
