A pharmaceutical and microbiological analysis of mouthwashes

Title: A pharmaceutical and microbiological analysis of mouthwashes
Authors: Attard, Christopher
Abstract: Previous evaluation of mouthwashes, have very largely concentrated on
determinations on the anti-plaque activity (Axelsson, 1987), their
ability to control gingivitis, (Clark et aI, 1987) and the effects of specific
chemical agents used to reduce the bacterial count (Hogg, 1987). A
pharmaceutical and microbiological analysis of 14 mouthwashes
available in Malta were investigated, at St Luke's Hospital and the
University of Malta.

Determination of acetylator phenotype with respect to isoniazid in Malta

Title: Determination of acetylator phenotype with respect to isoniazid in Malta
Authors: Vella, John Paul
Abstract: The studies carried out involved isoniazid, an important
chemotherapeutic agent in anti-tuberculous treatment. Two main aims
were identified, and both were concerned with the existence of fast and
slow acetylators (inactivators) of isoniazid. The first aim was the
determination of the distribution ratio of fast and slow metabolisers in a
sample of Maltese volunteers, this quite possibly being the first time any
such attempt was made locally. A secondary design of the first aim was
the possible correlation of factors, other than genetic ones, with the
acetylator phenotype. The second aim was an attempt at reasserting
certain genetic principles with regards to the isoniazid acetylator
phenotype, in a Maltese context. These principles were established in
1960 by Evans et al and stated that the isoniazid acetylator phenotype is
determined by a single pair of genes located on an autosomal chromosome,
with the gene for slow acetylation recessive to that for fast acetylation.

Comparative bioavailability studies of rifampicin

Title: Comparative bioavailability studies of rifampicin
Authors: Micallef, Marco
Abstract: The present study was undertaken to compare in a cross-over design in both
males and females, the bioavaiIability of rifampicin, when given in a
combined formulation with isoniazid, between an established standard
product and a locally produced generic product.

Polarography in drug and pharmaceutical analysis

Title: Polarography in drug and pharmaceutical analysis
Authors: Cilia, Mark
Abstract: Electroanalysis is the separation and determination of chemicals by
electrolysis. Voltammetry is a term used to describe all electroanalytical
techniques, which involve the application of an external potential on the
system and utilize the current-potential relationship arising at a
polarizable microelectrode to calculate the concentration of the
electroactive species. When the working electrode is a mercury electrode,
the technique is called polarography.
The purpose of this work is to illustrate the applicability of these
techniques, especially polarography in pharmacy. This is because the
past decase has revealed a remarkable and renewed interest in the
application of electroanalytical techniques to the analysis of drugs and
pharmaceuticals.
