Title: Diabetes: summary of the preliminary report on the epidemiological survey
Authors: Schranz, Antoine G.
Abstract: This is a summary regarding the epidemiological survey which was conducted in Malta in 1981 by the Department of Health in collaboration with Governments of Yugoslavia and Belgium and the World Health Organization (WHO), which confirms that diabetes mellitus is a major health problem in Malta. A description of the study subjects and methods used in the survey is outlined, together with the relative derived outcomes. Results show that although the etiology of diabetes in Malta remains unclear, the survey suggest a rather strong environmental influence, in addition to possible genetic susceptibility.

Spontaneous intracranial haemorrhage

Title: Spontaneous intracranial haemorrhage
Authors: Zrinzo, Laurence V.
Abstract: The diagnosis of spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage can be arrived clinically through the observation of various symptoms and signs, whereby a list of the main pathophysiological processes is provided together with the relative causes. Not all cases of spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage are presented with easily recognized symptoms. For this reason a broad diagnosis is required and in this regard the author highlights four methods to properly diagnose and treat this illness. These methods entail the mundane art of history taking, the hunt-down attitude in the clinical examination, the judicious use of investigative procedures and the adequate neurosurgical intervention. Each method is then illustrated with relevant case studies. It is of utmost importance that cases are treated with adequate management in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality of this ailment.

Title: A precis of present surgical treatment of congenital heart disease
Authors: Yates, A.K.
Abstract: Congenital heart disease is to be considered into two groups, namely the Cyanotic and Acyanotic heart disease, whereby the cardiac abnormalities are examined for each group. Furthermore, the conditions of congenital heart surgery are examined in four groups, specifically, not operable, ideally operable, satisfactorily operable and unsatisfactorily operable. The division of these groups is important for assessing the validity of submitting a child to major heart operation in relation to operative risk and subsequent benefits and prognosis.
