Title: [Book Review] Nobility, Faith and Masculinity : The Hospitaller Knights of Malta c.1580-c.1700
Authors: Farrugia, Aleks
Abstract: Book Review for Nobility, Faith and Masculinity: The Hospitaller Knights of Malta c.1580-c.1700. By Emanuel Buttigieg. Continuum, 2011. ISBN 9781441103437.
Buttigieg provides the reader with an intimate insight into the
mores and ideals of the ruling class of the time; an unprecedented task,
ironically, in a historiographical tradition that boasts of the singular
heritage of its early modem period. Nobility, Faith and Masculinity
proposes a cultural history of a ruling class gathered from the echelons
of European aristocracy in a unique set-up, that of a military order, on an
island administered as sovereign territory. It is therefore an exploration
that transcends the enclaves of the Maltese islands to delve into the wider
reality of the mores and ideals lived by the aristocracy on the European
continent.

Title: Il repertorio musicale della Cattedrale di Mdina (Malta) nel XVII Secolo
Authors: Bruni, Franco
decisa influenza deIIo stile d"OItremare'. NeIIa prima parte verranno

Virtual voyage to Loreto : how to visit the Holy House in Spirit (seventeenth-eighteenth centuries)

Title: Virtual voyage to Loreto : how to visit the Holy House in Spirit (seventeenth-eighteenth centuries)
Authors: Jacobson Schutte, Anne
Abstract: In Roman Catholic thought, the house of religious imagination has
many mansions. Jean Gerson and Ignatius of Loyola recommended
'composition of place': employing the imagination to furnish all the
details of a setting in which one observes and shares in the sufferings
of Jesus or the Virgin Mary. Matteo Ricci advocated the construction
of a 'memory palace': locating images representing religious figures,
events, and doctrines in specific places within a building, where at
a later time they could easily be retrieved. This paper, a tribute to
Duane Osheim's most recent interest, concerns a third way of using
the religious imagination: thinking one's way into a site of pilgrimage
unfeasible to visit in person, the Holy House at Loreto.
