Title: Treating a case of Savant syndrome
Authors: Busuttil, Joseph
Abstract: Memory and artistic prodigies among the population at large are uncommon; among the mentally retarded, they are rarer still. This article describes the treatment of such a case, technically known as the Savant Syndrome, seen by occupational therapists at Mount Carmel Psychiatric Hospital and treated over a period of 18 years.

The superior mesenteric artery syndrome

Title: The superior mesenteric artery syndrome
Authors: Attard, Alex R.
Abstract: Obstruction of the duodenum by entrapment between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) is a controversial entity. Acceptance of this syndrome as a clinical entity has not been universal because of confusion with other causes of upper gastrointestinal obstruction. Two cases which sharply exemplify the clinical and anatomic features of the SMA syndrome are reported. Symptoms mimic pyloric outlet obstruction but gastroscopy is frequently normal and the diagnosis is made on barium studies. The anatomic features of this entity are a narrow angle between the aorta and the SMA, together with high fixation of the duodenum by the ligament of Treitz. The SMA syndrome may be acute or chronic and responds well to duodenojejunostomy.

Title: The ship-surgeon in the navy of the Order of St. John in Malta
Authors: Cassar, Paul
Abstract: By the time the Knights came to Malta in 1530, they had evolved into a highly efficient naval force. In this article the author describes the training provided to the surgical students of the Order of St. John. It describes in detail the day to day tasks performed when on board of the galleys and describes also the dangers the surgical teams encountered whilst sailing.

Screening of internationally adopted children

Title: Screening of internationally adopted children
Authors: Lenicker, Herbert Manfred; Vassallo Agius, Paul; Portelli, Alfred V.; Dalmas, Miriam
Abstract: Currently, we have no local generally agreed guidelines for the examination of children adopted overseas. Out of 163 adopted children, who were brought into Malta between January 1991 and June 1992, 140 (86%) were seen at the children’s Outpatient Department, St. Luke’s Hospital. They were clinically examined and screened for hepatitis, H.I.V. infection, syphilis and tuberculosis. The results obtained showed that screening revealed important illness in a considerable number of these children. Standardised mandatory screening tests should be introduced for all internationally adopted children.
