      <title>Twentieth century religious paintings and sculptures in Malta : a critical and historical analysis</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/130339</link>
      <description>Title: Twentieth century religious paintings and sculptures in Malta : a critical and historical analysis
Abstract: This dissertation analyses the roots and developments of religious painting and &#xD;
sculpture in Malta during the twentieth century. The study focuses primarily on &#xD;
religious art and refers to secular art only to support the arguments under &#xD;
discussion The artistic field is vast and therefore the study concentrates mainly &#xD;
on painting, but reference is made to other visual arts, that is, sculpture and &#xD;
architecture, when a major contribution is given in that particular field. &#xD;
The aim of the dissertation is to give a holistic approach to religious painting &#xD;
and sculpture in the twentieth century. Therefore, rather than treating each artist &#xD;
in isolation, the dissertation tries to compare and contrast the artists under &#xD;
discussion and to detect the influences and develoµmenls throughout different &#xD;
periods. &#xD;
Art cannot be studied in isolation and, therefore, each chapter is introduced by &#xD;
a short investigation of the political and social field within which the artists of that &#xD;
particular period lived and worked.

      <title>The Franciscan Capuchin charism of brotherhood</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/130024</link>
      <description>Title: The Franciscan Capuchin charism of brotherhood
Abstract: The present work tries to analyse the Franciscan Capuchin brotherhood from &#xD;
three points of view, which points will be tackled in three separate chapters. In &#xD;
Chapter One, I shall be studying the concept of brotherhood within the writings of &#xD;
Saint Francis. The Rules, both the earlier and the later one, the Testament as well as &#xD;
his Admonitions will be given appropriate importance. Chapter Two will explore how &#xD;
this Franciscan brotherhood has been and is being enfleshed within the Capuchin &#xD;
tradition. Sources such as the Capuchin Constitutions, together with the letters of the &#xD;
General Minister Br. John Corriveau will greatly contribute to this endeavour. The &#xD;
concluding chapter envisages the confirmation of the theme of brotherhood by the &#xD;
Church as shown in her principal magisterial texts. Particular attention will be given &#xD;
to the fact that the Franciscan Capuchin brotherhood mirrors the nature of the Church &#xD;
by being itself a powerful example of consecrated communion. To render this &#xD;
concept more down to earth, proposals as well as examples, taken from the Maltese &#xD;
Franciscan Capuchin Province of Saint Paul, will be offered as a help on how to &#xD;
create and foster a Franciscan Capuchin fraternity.

      <title>Popular religiosity in Malta : an application of the directory on popular piety</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/129769</link>
      <description>Title: Popular religiosity in Malta : an application of the directory on popular piety
Abstract: Popular Religiosity in Malta: An Application of the Directory on Popular Piety is &#xD;
the title of this dissertation. The Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy -&#xD;
Principles and Guidelines, issued by the Congregation for the Divine Worship and the &#xD;
Discipline of the Sacraments, contains much of relevance to the Maltese context. &#xD;
Studying the Directory for the purpose of learning how to apply it locally is the main &#xD;
aim and purpose of this dissertation. The first chapter seeks to reach an adequate &#xD;
comprehension of the nature of popular piety in Malta. The analysis is carried out from &#xD;
the anthropological, sociological and historical perspectives. A case study is also &#xD;
included in order to help further define certain prominent characteristics of local popular &#xD;
piety and their effects. The purpose of the second chapter is to study ways of &#xD;
implementing the principles and guidelines, provided by the Directory, in Malta. The &#xD;
primary approach is theological especially since the Directory provides an overview of &#xD;
the theological preparation required to fully comprehend liturgy and popular piety in the &#xD;
light of the necessity of applying these guidelines. The principles of the Directory are &#xD;
applied to each type of devotion examined in Chapter after scrutiny. The conclusion &#xD;
draws recommendations for the application of the Directory in the popular religiosity of &#xD;
contemporary Maltese society. Without harming the existent good, we as a Church &#xD;
should strive to eradicate harmful and erroneous elements which are often present in the &#xD;
various forms of popular devotions.
