Title: Maltese internees and their mail
Abstract: At the outbreak of the Second World War the Maltese who were known for their strong Italian
sympathies were detained in secure premises although they protested strongly as they
maintained fiercely that they had committed no crimes. The first arrests of these so called
internees were carried out during May and June 1940. Fifty four from a total of eighty internees
were arrested between 11th and 31st May 1940. A further seventeen were arrested during the
remaining of the year 1940 and the beginning of 1941. Some of the internees were prominent
figures such a Enrico Mizzi who was a future Prime Minister, Sir Arturo Mercieca who was
Chief Justice and President of the Court of Appeal and Vincenzo Bonello who was an art critic
and historian and a Museum curator. The internment camps in Malta were located in Fort San
Salvatore Cottonera from May to 7th July 1940, Corradino Prison Paola from 7th July 1940 to
17th July 1940, St. Agatha Convent at Rabat from 17'h July 1940 to 24'h April 1942 and finally
Villa Portelli Sliema from 24'h April 1942 to 22nct October 1943. Villa Portelli was never used
for men but was solely for women internees. [excerpt]
