This gild, of which the earliest record is 1179/80 contained pepperers, spicers and apothecaries. The latter seem to have been an autonomous section, for as early as 1306, there is a mention of wardens of the apothecaries in the City of London records. The titles pepperer, spicer and apothecary were often used for the same person on different occasions.
