      <title>Social reality and local community : an empirical investigation of St. Paul's Bay and environs</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/76298</link>
      <description>Title: Social reality and local community : an empirical investigation of St. Paul's Bay and environs
Abstract: San Pawl il-Bahar has been transformed from a small village &#xD;
in the northern part of the island into the second largest &#xD;
locality we have in Malta. (in real terms I believe that this &#xD;
locality is the largest one because of the large number of &#xD;
people who live here but are registered elsewhere). &#xD;
This community was mainly formed of farmers and fishermen. &#xD;
Then, during the summer months a number of residents came &#xD;
over for their summer holidays from different parts of the &#xD;
island. When tourism increased, a number of hotels were built &#xD;
within the limits of San Pawl il-Bahar. This very often meant &#xD;
that during the summer months the population of the area &#xD;
increased to proportions that were considered to be excessive &#xD;
by the local community. &#xD;
In the mean time the area was passing through a process of &#xD;
construction (unfortunately following a building scheme that &#xD;
leaves much to be desired), which was changing the physical &#xD;
appearance of the locality. At the same time, this construction &#xD;
was providing a number of habitable units that would one day be inhabited. Up to a certain extent, people are now living in a &#xD;
locality where, on the one hand development has actually &#xD;
never stopped, while a good number of habitable units are &#xD;
still uninhabited, and more recently (as a result of the slow &#xD;
down in the construction industry), built up unfinished blocks &#xD;
have become the order of the day. &#xD;
This process of enlargement, both in the physical sense and in &#xD;
terms of population, has not come to an end. On the contrary, &#xD;
the trend has continued to he more pronounced. At the moment &#xD;
there is no indication that the increase in population will stop, &#xD;
at least in the near future. On the contrary there is a tendency &#xD;
for the population to continue to grow even further, and people &#xD;
are coming to the locality from all parts of the island, and &#xD;
from abroad. &#xD;
A large number of people from other European countries are &#xD;
taking up residence in the area. Up to fifty years ago San Pawl &#xD;
ii-Bahar consisted of a relatively small group of houses around &#xD;
the Parish Church. Then there were a number of hamlets spread &#xD;
around the locality. These hamlets included, Burmarrad, Bidnija, Manikata and Wardija. As things stand now, most of &#xD;
Bidnija has become part of Mosta, and Manikata has become &#xD;
part of Mellieha, in terms of the local council legislation. &#xD;
This implied that the physical area of San Pawl ii-Bahar has &#xD;
been reduced since the founding of the Local Councils in 1993. &#xD;
However, very much to the contrary of what happened in terms &#xD;
of area, the population of San Pawl ii-Bahar has increased at a &#xD;
very fast rate. The appearance of the locality has been totally &#xD;
changed. While the village has been transformed from a series &#xD;
of one/two storey buildings into a series of medium rise buildings, these buildings are being transformed into &#xD;
overpopulated apartments. &#xD;
The locality has now grown to the extent that there is one EU &#xD;
national living in San Pawl il-Bahar for every two Maltese who live here. To these Maltese and EU Nationals, another &#xD;
1700 non Maltese, non-EU nationals who have a registered ID card in San Pawl il-Bahar have to be added. Besides these, &#xD;
another number of Maltese and foreigners who live here under &#xD;
one pretext or another, but who are registered elsewhere, have &#xD;
to be added. &#xD;
The area accounts for over 11,000 hotel beds 5 and close to a thousand commercial outlets which attract visitors from all &#xD;
over the island. These hotel beds account for the presence of &#xD;
thousands of temporary residents, especially during the &#xD;
summer months. &#xD;
During the summer months thousands of other Maltese from &#xD;
different parts of the island visit the locality for a number of &#xD;
months. &#xD;
All these factors influence the daily lives of the residents of &#xD;
the locality. Conflicts are a daily occurrence and those who &#xD;
administer the area have a duty to try and ensure that a sense &#xD;
of community is developed for the good of the community and &#xD;
the locality. &#xD;
In spite of all the efforts that have been made, so far social &#xD;
integration has not been very successful. In this study I try to find out what affects the daily life of the residents of San Pawl &#xD;
ii-Bahar, and possibly indicate further studies that are &#xD;
essential to change the present reality.

      <title>Ir-rapprezentazzjoni tas-socjeta fir-rumanzi ta' Frans Sammut</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/7404</link>
      <description>Title: Ir-rapprezentazzjoni tas-socjeta fir-rumanzi ta' Frans Sammut
Abstract: L-awturi jinfluwenzaw irwieħhom miċ-ċirkustanzi, il-fatti u l-kuntesti storiċi u kulturali li&#xD;
jagħġnu l-milieu soċjali tagħhom, u b’hekk jippreżentawhom bil-modi espressivi varji&#xD;
f’letteratura li l-eżistenza tagħha tiddependi mill-mixja u mill-prassi kulturali tas-soċjetà&#xD;
nfisha. Kif jistqarru l-Istoriċisti l-Ġodda test ma jimitax iżda jinvestiga u jirrappreżenta&#xD;
kuntest soċjali definit. Skonthom il-letteratura għandha “tikxef” dak li s-soċjetà kienet jew&#xD;
hija aljenata minnu. Il-Professur tal-Filosofija Ole Martin Skilleas jisħaq li t-test huwa “a&#xD;
tissue of quotations from diverse centres of culture, and does not come from the author,&#xD;
just through them” (66). L-esperjenzi soċjali (jew personali tal-awtur) u l-avvenimenti&#xD;
storiċi jiġu ppreżentati, b’mod deskrittiv jew preskrittiv, fil-letteratura bħala&#xD;
rappreżentazzjoni tas-soċjetà.&#xD;
Għal ħafna kittieba Maltin il-perijodu ta’ wara l-Indipendenza kien ta’ theddida għall-formazzjoni&#xD;
tal-kultura u l-identità nazzjonali. Il-kultura l-“antika” kellha tidħol, anki jekk fi&#xD;
djalettika, mal-kultura l-“ġdida.” Din id-djalettika kulturali, li testendi ruħha għal djalettika&#xD;
mentali, tispiċċa toħloq tensjoni bejn żewġ naħat opposti. Mingħajr ma ninjoraw il-problemi&#xD;
marbutin mad-definizzjoni ta’ dawn iż-żewġ kategoriji, nistgħu ngħidu li l-kunflitt&#xD;
huwa bejn il-konservattivi bħala l-maġġoranza u l-progressivi bħala l-minoranza. Iż-&#xD;
żewġ naħat jimxu f’żewġ toroq diverġenti li ma jistgħu jiltaqgħu jew jinfdu qatt.

      <title>Il-mara t-tajba u l-mara l-hazina fil-poezija Maltija</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/7403</link>
      <description>Title: Il-mara t-tajba u l-mara l-hazina fil-poezija Maltija
Abstract: Dan ix-xogħol jitfa’ dawl fuq il-ħarsa tal-poeta maskili lejn il-mara. Din il-ħarsa&#xD;
tista’ tkun kemm letterali u kemm metaforika. Permezz ta’ din il-ħarsa, il-poeta&#xD;
raġel jiddeċiedi jekk f’għajnejh il-mara għandhiex titqies bħala mara&#xD;
tajba jew mara ħażina. F’dan l-istudju joħorġu wkoll dawk l-aspetti li jagħmlu&#xD;
mara tajba u mara ħażina, pereżempju l-mara hija meqjusa tajba jekk tkun&#xD;
kwieta, issir omm, reliġjuża u fuq kollox sottomessa u passiva. Il-mara l-&#xD;
ħażina hi meqjusa bħala l-oppost tal-mara t-tajba. Għax tirribella, ma&#xD;
taċċettax li tiġi ddominata mir-raġel, hija indipendenti u fuq tagħha. Diversi&#xD;
teoriji femministi, fosthom dawk ta’ Simone De Beauvoir, Mar Wollstonecraft,&#xD;
Mary Daly u Julia Kristev ifissru aħjar il-għala l-poeta maskili jitkellem b’ċertu&#xD;
mod, u x’inhu dak li s-soċjetà tistenna mill-mara. Xi drabi jidher ukoll li hemm&#xD;
viżjonijiet kuntrastanti fit-teoriji femministi. L-ideat dwar il-mara t-tajba u l-mara&#xD;
l-ħażina ilhom ħafna jeżistu u ma jidhrux biss fil-poeżija Maltija.

      <title>Analizi tal-kuncett tal-kruha u difetti fizici fil-proza Maltija</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/7391</link>
      <description>Title: Analizi tal-kuncett tal-kruha u difetti fizici fil-proza Maltija
Abstract: F’din it-teżi se jiġi studjat kif tidher il-kruha fiżika fil-proża Maltija billi ssir analiżi&#xD;
komparattiva ta’ tipi ta’ kruha fiżika li jidhru f’rumanzi ta’ ġeneru Storiku-Romantiku, SoċjoRealista,&#xD;
u Modern.&#xD;
Għaldaqstant se jiġi identifikat min huma l-karattri l-koroh u liema tip ta’ kruha għandhom.&#xD;
Irid jiġi stabbilit pereżempju, humiex persunaġġi taż-żewġ sessi li jingħataw il-kruha, jew&#xD;
jekk il-kruha hijiex kwalità li tingħata lil xi sess aktar minn ieħor; jekk issirx differenza:&#xD;
fl-età tal-persunaġġ; jekk il-persuni b'età kbira biss jidhrux biss koroh, kif inhi d-dehra taż-&#xD;
żgħażagħ u t-tfal u x'jingħad għax-xjuħ. Se jidher jekk dawn jissemmewx ta' spiss fir-rumanzi.&#xD;
fin-nazzjonalità; jekk hemmx differenzi fiżiċi minn nazzjonalità għal oħra u se jidher liema&#xD;
huma n-nazzjonalitajiet li jissemmew permezz tal-karattri.&#xD;
fil-klassi soċjali; jekk hemmx klassijiet differenti u liema huma. Se jiġi speċifikat liema&#xD;
dehriet partikolari jissemmew ta' spiss fuq nies ta' klassi soċjali baxxa u dehriet oħra fuq nies&#xD;
tal-klassi l-għolja u x'qegħdin juru fuq dik il-klassi.&#xD;
It-tipi ta' kruha li se jidhru f'din l-analiżi se jinqasmu f'dehra, difetti fiżiċi, mard, faqar u&#xD;
xjuħija. Dawn it-tipi lkoll se jidhru fuq persunaġġi differenti, li kull wieħed minnhom għandu&#xD;
t-tip ta' ħajja tiegħu. Kull darba li jiġri dan, se jiġu studjati l-modi kif kittieba differenti&#xD;
jwasslu l-idea tal-kruha.
