On 6th February 1800, under Captain Cyprien Renaudin, she departed from Toulon leading a squadron comprising the frigate Badine, the corvettes Sans Pareille and Fauvette, and the store ship Ville de Marseille, under Counter-Admiral Jean-Baptiste Perree. On the morning of 18th February 1800, a British fleet under Admiral Horatio Nelson made up of HMS Bonne Citoyenne (originally a 20 gun corvette of the French Navy captured by the Royal Navy in 1796), HMS Foudroyant (Nelson's Flagship), HMS Nothumberland and HMS Alexander started chasing the French squadron off Lampedusa. In the ensuing Battle of the Malta Convoy, Counter-Admiral JeanBaptiste Perree was killed andLe Genereux covered the squadron, allowingBadine, Sans Pareille and Fauvette to escape, before striking her colours which became a significant war trophy, now preserved at the National Museum in Greenwich. Philatelists began collecting both mint and used stamps, while enthusiasts also focused on philatelic covers featuring a single high-value stamp or covers bearing multiple stamps. Some stamps remained on their original covers, while others were removed to be collected as used stamps. The growing interest attracted collectors from abroad, and stamp dealers began producing covers either on request or freely for the market.
