Malta railway postal couriers

Title: Malta railway postal couriers
Abstract: One of the railway's most interesting characteristics, or perhaps more correctly, characters, was the post office railway courier, whose uniform (summer style and winter) was an almost exact copy of that worn by British non-commissioned naval personnel. Hence, the nickname 'sailor', in Maltese 'bahri', which was the title afforded them. Their function was to collect from the sorting office the bags of mail for delivery to postmen responsible for the areas adjacent to the railway line from Valletta to Notabile (Mdina). Couriers would travel on the train, handing the bags to the relevant postman. The reverse situation applied when the postman returned to a later train with his collections for the day.
Title: 1844 Malta mail sack
Abstract: A curious exhibit during this year's Maltex Exhibition was a Post Office sack from 1844 which comes from the private collection of Mr. Jesmond Borg. Visitors raised a number of questions about it and here I attempt to give a little background information to hopefully clear some of them. In 1844, Inland and Foreign mail services were still two distinct setups from one another. The Island Post Office being run by Mr. Vincenzo Mamo (1838-1849) was entrusted with the handling of local mail, while the Packet Agency which was under the direction of Mr. Richard J. Bourchier (who was the Packet Agent from 1828 up to ca. 1853), handled foreign mail. [excerpt]
