      <title>Do registered nurses read the literature related to nursing?</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/65727</link>
      <description>Title: Do registered nurses read the literature related to nursing?
Abstract: The aims of this study are to investigate whether &#xD;
registered nurses view reading as &#xD;
order to keep current in knowledge, &#xD;
nurses read the literature related &#xD;
being important in &#xD;
whether registered &#xD;
to nursing and the &#xD;
frequency with which they read, what registered nurses &#xD;
read most and which are the main sources of literature &#xD;
for registered nurses. &#xD;
The study proposed is a survey of a simple random sample &#xD;
of 50 qualified, registered nurses, providing nursing &#xD;
care to clients in acute areas in St. Luke's Hospital and &#xD;
Karin Grech Hospital (Malta). &#xD;
The data collection tool to be used is a personal &#xD;
interview schedule which has been translated into and &#xD;
would be conducted in Maltese. A pilot study, using a &#xD;
convenient sample of 5 registered nurses who were &#xD;
eligible for inclusion according to the criteria &#xD;
established for the full-scale study, was carried out to &#xD;
test the instrument. This showed that only small changes &#xD;
were needed and so the interview schedule could be used &#xD;
without further testing.&#xD;
The study should provide an indication of the present &#xD;
situation with regards to reading amongst registered &#xD;
nurses and serve as a useful basis for further studies on &#xD;
continuing education.

      <title>Triage in the Emergency and Admitting Department</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/65726</link>
      <description>Title: Triage in the Emergency and Admitting Department
Abstract: Malta's Emergency and Admitting Department provides a &#xD;
unique blend of casualty, orthopaedic out patients facilities &#xD;
and disaster management for road, air and sea incidents, &#xD;
making it an extremely busy department. Investigating the &#xD;
Department for feasibility of implementing a nurse triage &#xD;
system appears to be a priority. &#xD;
A questionnaire was devised to elicit the views of &#xD;
nursing and medical personnel working within the Emergency and &#xD;
Admitting Department, on how the decision is currently made to &#xD;
provide a patient with immediate care, and who is responsible &#xD;
for that decision. &#xD;
A pilot study was carried out using a sample of 6 nurses &#xD;
and doctors, and yielding an 83% response rate. &#xD;
The questionnaire scored highly on face validity and &#xD;
inter-rater reliability, requiring only minor amendments &#xD;
before it may be used in the main study. &#xD;
One of the shortcomings acknowledged within the study is &#xD;
that a single method of data collection may not be sufficient &#xD;
and that the questionnaire may need to be augmented with &#xD;
interview or observation within the Department. &#xD;
The author concludes that to introduce triage into the &#xD;
Emergency and Admitting Department, it may be necessary for &#xD;
in-service training, and a review of documentation, but by &#xD;
taking note of the views of staff currently working within the &#xD;
Department, any changes made may be welcomed and sustained, &#xD;
leading to improved quality of care for patients.

      <title>Death and dying : student nurses experience, knowledge and support</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/65385</link>
      <description>Title: Death and dying : student nurses experience, knowledge and support
Abstract: The available literature, which was produced in other &#xD;
countries, indicates that students often go through &#xD;
unpleasant experiences when dealing with death and &#xD;
dying. This study was devised to explore the &#xD;
experiences of the Maltese student nurse in dealing &#xD;
with death and dying in the clinical situation focusing &#xD;
mainly on knowledge and support. A questionnaire &#xD;
comprising a mixture of open and closed questions was &#xD;
devised which would be distributed to sixty students &#xD;
randomly chosen from among the nursing students in the &#xD;
Institute of Health Care. The validity and &#xD;
understandability of the questionnaire were tested &#xD;
through a pilot study, the results of which suggested &#xD;
it was appropriate for use. Both quantitive and &#xD;
qualitive analysis of data would be used. The apparent &#xD;
strengths and limitations of the study have been &#xD;
discussed. On conducting the study and with a &#xD;
satisfactory response the study would hopefully provide &#xD;
a broad sketch of the current situation, indicating &#xD;
what would merit focusing on and exploring further in &#xD;
future studies. In addition, the results would offer &#xD;
guidelines to planning and delivering the students &#xD;
nurses' education and clinical experience.

      <title>The role of the nurse in the medical ward round</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/65238</link>
      <description>Title: The role of the nurse in the medical ward round
Abstract: This research project aims to investigate nurses' and &#xD;
doctors' views about the ward round and the nurse's &#xD;
role in it. It is also intended to stimulate &#xD;
participants to think about the topic. &#xD;
Structured interviews and questionnaires for doctors &#xD;
and nurses respectively were formulated for data &#xD;
collection with the total population of registered &#xD;
nurses, senior assistants and consultants working in &#xD;
medical wards at Saint Luke's hospital being included &#xD;
in the main study. A small &#xD;
carried out to Identify flaws &#xD;
primarily the aim was to &#xD;
scale pilot study was &#xD;
with the methodology but &#xD;
test the tool for its' &#xD;
understandability and acceptability and to verify &#xD;
that the data collected was relevant to the purposes of &#xD;
the study. As a result of the pilot study, minor &#xD;
alterations to the tool were undertaken in preparation &#xD;
for the main study. &#xD;
A discussion of the literature review, proposed &#xD;
methodology and Pilot study are included with &#xD;
suggestions being made for additional research studies. &#xD;
The benefits of this special project were multiple &#xD;
including better understanding of the ward round, the &#xD;
nurses' role in it plus the power rituals involved. &#xD;
Better comprehension of various methodological formats &#xD;
and their application into practice was also promoted. &#xD;
However for further enrichment the study needs to be &#xD;
undertaken and further research studies related to the &#xD;
nurses' roles during the ward round and nursing roles &#xD;
in general are also recommended, as nursing needs to &#xD;
critically examine every thing it does to continue to &#xD;
develop and become a research based profession.
