Abstract: On the 17th July, 1797, Bailiff Ferdinand von Hompesch (1797-1798) aged 53 years was unaimously elected, as the 28th Grandmaster for Malta and the 72nd Grandmaster of the Order. On the same day that Ferdinand von Hompesch became Grand Master he began informing the European Heads of State that were friends of the Order about his election to the Grand Mastership - and continued doing so up to the 3rd August 1797.
