      <title>Public transport and the environment in Malta</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/96104</link>
      <description>Title: Public transport and the environment in Malta
Abstract: More than 100 years of motorised transport has changed the world. It would be &#xD;
impossible to imagine life today without the mobility bestowed by motorised transport. &#xD;
Industry and local public services are dependant on modern commercial vehicles for a &#xD;
whole range of tasks, ranging from shipment of parts through to ambulance transport. &#xD;
The public at large is equally dependant on motorised transport for practically all its &#xD;
activities be it going to work or for pleasure. No other means of transport offers &#xD;
comparable flexibility. But the growing number of vehicles is placing ever-greater &#xD;
burdens on the environment, affecting our atmosphere, plant and animal life, and man &#xD;
as well. Even the cleanest and most economical of conventional engines burn fossil &#xD;
fuels. It is not yet technically possible even with catalytic converters and other &#xD;
technical improvements to completely prevent the emission of carbon dioxide and &#xD;
other harmful emissions from these engines. It is with this thought in mind that this &#xD;
present study is undertaken in the hope that an increased awareness is fostered and &#xD;
policy decisions are taken to reduce as much as possible the impact on the &#xD;
environment.

      <title>Managing hunting and trapping in the Maltese Islands</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/78726</link>
      <description>Title: Managing hunting and trapping in the Maltese Islands
Abstract: Hunting and trapping in the Maltese islands are two human activities at the &#xD;
centre of much debate. On the one hand the anti hunting - lobby deplore the &#xD;
way hunting and trapping occur in the Maltese islands while on the other &#xD;
hand, hunters state that their hobby is part of local tradition and is there only pastime. &#xD;
The introduction of this work gives a general overview of the situation present in the Maltese islands with regard to the issue of bird hunting and trapping.&#xD;
The work discusses the history of bird hunting and trapping in Malta and the arguments put forward by hunters , trappers and environmental groups on the &#xD;
issue. It then analyses the manner in which the 1993 bird hunting and &#xD;
trapping regulations came into being. &#xD;
Interviews were held with a number of key persons involved ill the issue and &#xD;
discussions were held with a group of hunters and a group of hunters' &#xD;
children. In addition, a questionnaire was sent to all Local Councils in the &#xD;
Maltese islands. &#xD;
In conclusion, this work outlines a plan by means of which hunting and &#xD;
trapping can be better managed in the Maltese islands. This plan is based on &#xD;
the analyses of the Local Council responses together with the analysis of the &#xD;
interviews with key persons, hunters and their children.

      <title>Cultural practices of strawberry cultivation in Malta</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/78599</link>
      <description>Title: Cultural practices of strawberry cultivation in Malta
Abstract: The strawberry is a popular small fruit in Malta. Demand for strawberries has &#xD;
increased in the past years and is still growing. A market for locally produced &#xD;
strawberries for fresh consumption surely exists. This soft, juicy, nutritious, low &#xD;
calorific, bright red, slightly acidic, delicious fruit is sought for all year round by &#xD;
both the inhabitants and the ever increasing tourists that visit the island. In response &#xD;
to the above, strawberry cultivation and thus production has been increasing year &#xD;
after year.

      <description>Title: The fungal flora of stored Zea mays L
Abstract: It is estimated that total post harvest losses of grains  can be as high as 50% in some &#xD;
countries. Most result from infestation by insects, microorganisms, rodents and birds. A &#xD;
smaller but quite significant proportion of the total losses results from respiration and &#xD;
gradual deterioration of viability, nutritive quality, and end - use properties during &#xD;
storage.
