      <title>Setting up a special library with limited resources : a case-study of the Attorney General's office library</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/97469</link>
      <description>Title: Setting up a special library with limited resources : a case-study of the Attorney General's office library
Abstract: The Office of the Attorney General may well be traced back to the times of the&#xD;
Order of St. John. Throughout the years, various changes were made in regards to the&#xD;
responsibilities carried out by this office. Being the main legal advisor of the&#xD;
Government of Malta, this resulted in its wide ranging set of functions in all spheres of&#xD;
Law in Malta.&#xD;
Due to the nature of the work involved, lawyers often need to consult books and&#xD;
other information resources. However, even though one may find more than enough&#xD;
information to go by, there is no form or structure of a library.&#xD;
In view of this, my main aim is to create and set up a fully functional specialised&#xD;
law library, using a library management system which will enable one to keep&#xD;
bibliographic records of what items can already be found within the office premises, if&#xD;
possible replace any lost publications, and keep record of the books' location. This&#xD;
essay will be a step-by-step narration at creating this library system, the obstacles that&#xD;
may arise, and how to best deal and overcome these difficulties with the available&#xD;
limited resources. Furthermore, due consideration will be given to the possible&#xD;
introduction of electronic resources being made available and shared amongst the legal&#xD;
staff.

      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/8461</link>
      <description>Title: An analytical bibliography of newspapers in Maltese : 1839-1939
Abstract: The proposed long essay has multiple objectives. It aims at creating an analytical bibliography of all newspapers in Maltese, whether political, satirical or religious; published in Malta from the 1839 to 1939. This should prove to be a valuable reference tool for researchers in the field, in particular the political, anthropological and cultural spheres. It is expected to serve also as an information platform to enhance public awareness with respect to the vast collection of newspapers treasured at the National Library and a comprehensive stock-take of the same collection. This long essay will go beyond the collection of the National Library and will also include newspapers which are found in other public and private collections and newspapers that are missing from such collections. It will lay particular emphasis on the provision of a comprehensive description of the newspapers, namely the title, the owners and / or publishers, the run of the periodical, the place of publication, the year of the last issue, the frequency of publication. Analytical information on the particular newspaper being described will be included also.

      <title>Archiving of media productions : a critical analysis</title>
      <link>https://www.um.edu.mt/library/oar/handle/123456789/8459</link>
      <description>Title: Archiving of media productions : a critical analysis
Abstract: The aim of this study is to produce a set of guidelines to Malta's archiving system of media productions including news features of the national broadcasting television station, the PBS. This is in view of developing international standards and procedures. BBC was taken as a case study and potential model for the local system. A qualitative study in the form of a case study was used as a data collection method. Information was obtained from three interviews together with additional notes and photos taken during a visit to the PBS archives. The introductory chapter starts with the history of the Maltese broadcasting system. International standards and procedures adopted by the International Council on Archives (ICA), the International Federation of Television Archives (IFTA) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) are mentioned together with examples of news television archives; Vanderbilt Television News Archives (VTNA) and Columbia Broadcasting System News Archive (CBS.) The following chapter focuses on the current and past situation of the PBS archives together with future plans. Importance attached to the actual preservation of these items is also studied. Information about the BBC archives together with their system of organising, retrieving and cataloguing media productions is given. This study concludes with a list of guidelines that can be adopted by the PBS archives for taking better care of these audiovisual archives that form part of our historical heritage.
