Abstract: The volume is a collection of the contributions of the experts of the COST C26 Action on “Urban&#xD;
Habitat Constructions under Catastrophic Events”: It represents the second deliverable of this&#xD;
Action, the first one being the Proceeding volume of the Workshop held in Prague on the 30th and&#xD;
31st May 2007.&#xD;
The papers in this volume correspond to the activity of the four Working Groups, during the period&#xD;
from June 2006 to July 2008. These results are presented in the Symposium held in Malta from the&#xD;
23rd to 25th October 2008. Twenty-two European Countries are participating in this Action (Austria,&#xD;
Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungry, Italy, Lithuania,&#xD;
Macedonia, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland,&#xD;
Turkey, United Kingdom).&#xD;
The papers, prepared in the form of datasheets, are subdivided according to the subjects, which the&#xD;
four WGs are dealing with. The subjects include:&#xD;
 Fire resistance (WG1), chaired by Frantisek Wald and Y.C.Wang;&#xD;
 Earthquake resistance (WG2), chaired by Dan Dubina and Alberto Mandara;&#xD;
 Impact and explosion resistance (WG3), by Mike Byfield and Gianfranco De Matteis;&#xD;
 Risk assessment for catastrophic scenarios in urban habitat (WG4), chaired by Michael Faber and Maurizio Indirli [excerpt from the Introduction]</description>

Abstract: There are a number of approaches to ensure the safe design of structures under fire&#xD;
conditions. This range is from a simple elemental prescriptive approach to a more&#xD;
advanced structural fire engineering approach. In the simple approach, realistic structural&#xD;
and fire behaviour are ignored and optimum design solutions in terms of safety and&#xD;
economy may not be reached. By considering the actual fire and structural behaviour,&#xD;
through more advanced methods, any weak links within the design can be identified and&#xD;
rectified, allowing safer, more robust, and possibly more economical buildings to be&#xD;
constructed. This paper presents the state of the art of fire safety, introduces the benefits&#xD;
of using a performance-based approach to fire engineering, and calls attention to&#xD;
European materials, freely available on the Internet, which support such design. [Excerpt from Introduction]

Abstract: ▪ Performance-based fire safety design is an accepted methodology in many countries&#xD;
of Europe for the verification of structural resistance in fire conditions. This&#xD;
calculation procedure takes into account the individual characteristics of the building&#xD;
and the passive and active fire protection methods.; ▪ A realistic understanding of the behaviour of structures in fire can be achieved and&#xD;
the overall safety of the building can be verified by using performance-based fire&#xD;
safety design. Through the more profound understanding of phenomena and a more&#xD;
precise analysis of structures in fire, an equal to or higher safety level than with&#xD;
