Abstract: Light is an essential element in the work environment which should be designed to support the workers in their activities. The majority of workers spend most of their time under artificial lighting but research indicates that little concern is given to the use of daylight in workplaces for the well being of the workers. The use of daylight in work places is more commonly sought for energy conservation. Apart from its benefits for visual performance, foreign research is discovering the role of natural light on the psychological and physiological well being of humans. This study examined the relationship between natural and artificial light and well being. It examined whether foreign findings are applicable to local workers in an organisation in the health sector. Primary data was collected from workers through a quantitative investigation of psychological distress in relation to light provision in the work environment. Working under a combination of natural and artificial light was found to be related to greater psychological well being of workers. In turn, such well being appears to be related to a better work performance and workplace relationships.
