Abstract: It is theorized that buckling instabilities might give rise to asymmetries about the galactic midplane upon forming a boxy-peanut-shaped bulge. In this dissertation, asymmetries were found after examining simulations of galaxies. However, the relationship between these asymmetries and the presence and strength of the boxy/- peanut formation has yet to be fully worked out. A theory relating the two could be utilized to determine whether boxy /peanut formation arises as a result of this. The formation of the Milky Way, amongst other galaxies with such bulges could thus be better understood.
