Abstract: In modern education foreign language learning has become increasingly important, giving students several advantages both on a personal level as well as on a professional one. In the Maltese educational system students are entitled to choose at least one foreign language when entering Middle School. In the current scholastic year (2019/2020) 50% of all secondary students in the three different sectors opted for Italian out of a choice of six different languages including French, German, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese. This study intends to further investigate the main reasons why students in Malta tend to prefer choosing Italian. Studies conducted in previous years, among which those by Caruana and Pace (2013) have shown that the Italian language prevailed over other languages primarily due to its cultural tradition, its geographical proximity and the influence of television. Many were able to speak Italian even if they had never studied it. However, things today have changed, and Italian is no longer considered to be the simple language mastered by almost everyone. As a matter of fact, Caruana and Pace (2019) have shown that nowadays the motivation to learn Italian in schools, is decreasing considerably over the years. By means of a questionnaire with approximately 70, year 9 students coming from Church, State and Independent schools, I will analyze the main motivations that led them to choose Italian as well as their expectations with regards to Italian for their future. The results will then be analyzed in comparison to other similar international studies conducted by Hassen (2012) and Carassia, Diodato and Hirose (2009). It will also provide insights about motivation in Italian language learning.
