dc.description.abstract | Purpose Accounting choices made by companies has been researched greatly in the literature. Locally, though, to the author's knowledge, only the study done by Micallef (2008) tackles this topic. This study intends to (1) investigate the determinants of accounting choices by local unlisted companies; (2) measure the level of harmonisation for the selected unlisted companies; and (3) compare the determinants of accounting choice and harmonisation of the selected unlisted companies with the results obtained by Micallef (2008) for listed entities. Design The objectives of this study were carried out through semistructured and e-mail based interviews held with management personnel and financial controllers. Findings Management of selected local unlisted companies, are more influenced by determinants of normative accounting theory and by the auditors rather than with positive accounting. This can be due to the specific characteristics found in the local environment as well as in the characteristics of the selected companies. There are no clear differences identified between listed and unlisted companies when it comes to the determinants of accounting choice. Conclusions Positive accounting theory, unlike what is found in the literature is not considered as important locally, whilst auditor influence, which is rarely mentioned in the literature is considered important locally, both by listed as well as unlisted companies. Harmonisation of both listed and unlisted companies, vary between one option and the other. Even though in general one can say that there is harmonisation locally, it is still lacking in certain options and therefore improvements in the future can be expected. Value This study is expected to be of use to local standard setters in their pursuit to enhance local GAPSE to make it more usable and enhancing local harmonisation. This study sheds light on the accounting choices by selected unlisted companies and the determinants behind such choices. | en_GB |
