Abstract: The article offers an overview of the development of Newman's reflections on the Church. Various contemporary authors express their opinion about Newman's ecclesiology. Pride of place is given to a comparative study of Newman's "Lectures on the Prophetical Office of the Church" (1837, written when he was an Anglican, and what he wrote forty years later, as a Catholic, in "Via Media of the Anglican Church" (1877). Various Newman experts in the UK analyse these two important texts. In a subsequent part of the research article, reference is made to Newman's "The Arians of the Fourth Century" (1833) and to his "On Consulting the Faithful", particularly with regard to the role of the laity. The charismatic dimension of the Church is also outlined. In the final part of the study, the present author discerns whether one can speak about ecumenical foreshadows in Newman.
Description: This article was translated from Maltese to English, upgraded and submitted for peer-review. Indeed it was published in Roczniki Teologiczne, 2021. 68(7), p.59-78 and thus can reach a much wider audience.
