Abstract: E-learning is fast becoming a popular educational strategy especially in higher education. Due to this, teachers have to find other ways to handle the basic concepts of teaching like sharing the course material, providing assistance and assessing the students’ learning outcomes. This paper will focus on the latter as online assessments need to be well planned because of some known concerns including different perceptions on cogency and trustworthiness of such assessments as regards to meeting the anticipated purposes. The paper outlines some methodologies used and looks into ways online assessment is being achieved in higher education. It also suggests different ways how assessment practices should be used in relation to various types of learning. The paper also presents results of a survey of 80 participants from Malta we carried out with the aim of understanding the preferences about e-learning and specifically about the suitable assessment methods for e-learning.
