Abstract: | This paper offers an examination of the development in Maltese on the level of syllable structure of words of the shape CVCVC from CVCC shapes in earlier Arabic, and how further changes in the language leads to restructurings both of individual vocabulary items from this class, and to a restructuring of a set of words from this class in terms of syllable structure. The process is termed "segholization" after a similar but by no means identical process in Hebrew. These changes are stated in the form of rules operating on an underlying form, and what further conclusions can be drawn from a consideration of this restructuring. |
