Due to it's vicinity to Sicily and the Italian mainland, Malta attracted a variety of Italian exiles. Under the British, Malta was considered liberal and these Italian exiles were welcomed warmly in literary circles. In Malta they were not only able to keep in contact with their families back home but also to continue writing about the politics of the day, and also about their life in Malta.en_GB
